Charcoal Lighting Fluid

Hi, I am slowly getting ready for my end of the month trip to FW. I am taking a bag of self-starting charcoal, in case I want to grill a couple of times. However, it's been a long time since I used these things and my past experience was, you really did need to add lighter fluid to them, or you wouldn't be cooking for a long time. I don't want to travel with lighter fluid in my trunk...I will have dry ice in a cooler and don't know if that would be hazardous, but don't want to chance it. Is lighter fluid usually available in the Meadows store? Thanks for your help!

@Tuffcookie, one of our arrival day habits has been (in the past) to fire up the charcoal grill that first night and cook a few steaks first, then a few burgers next, and some hot dogs lastly before the charcoal burns out. We eat some that first night and ziplock bag the rest for some reheat/microwave dinners on subsequent nights. I try to get the most meat/meals out of one bag of charcoal. Depending if you have a fridge to store or a microwave to reheat, you might consider the same technique.

I also use a disposable aluminum 13x9 pan over the meat to try to hold some heat in as it cooks rather than lose the heat up into the air. It's all about maximizing the BTU's available in one bag of charcoal (and some lighter fluid if need be).

PS - the Meadow TP DOES have camping essentials like charcoal and fluid but they charge an arm and a leg plus not much variety. For example, if you wanted a BIG bag of charcoal to purchase, you'd be disappointed. But Disney figures probably that if you want a BIG bag of charcoal, you could buy 2 of the overpriced smaller bags.

I haven't used lighter fluid in literally decades I use a charcoal chimney starter and fire starters. I used to use this material called newspaper with some cooking added but its no longer delivered to your door anymore.

I used to do newspapers, now I use tumbleweeds and Amazon paper in my chimney, newspapers are obsolete, sad

Came to recommend the same thing. Chimney starter is a game changer when it comes to charcoal and you'll never go back to lighter fluid after using one.

Yes i think I have the tumble weeds in my trailer but used to make fire starters from paper egg cartons, saw dust and wax.

The trading posts carry a decent sized bag of a brand called Fogo and some fire starters. I don’t think they carry lighter fluid anymore. I remember looking for it a couple of years ago and was told the Fogo didn’t need it.


Maybe there has been a change in the lighter fluid situation, but I know for sure Fogo is what they had at the end of August.
