we are coming to Orlando in January. Unfortunately we will not be staying at a Disney Resort and probably not going to the parks. We are looking for an "off property" character meal. We had family go to one last January. It may not be considered off property--but one you can get into without being in a resort or park.

I would think you could go to any of the meals at the resorts without being a guest at the resort (or park).
As long as you have a reservation, I am pretty sure they'll let you park for at least a couple hours

The Swan And Dolphin resorts have them. Don't know details, call them. They charge for parking but maybe they also validate for meals.

You can go to a character meal any at resort without staying there- you just drive to the resort and park. You will have to make a credit card guarantee ADR to go there. Otherwise I haven't seen anyplace off Disney property that has a Disney character buffet.

You can attend any character meal that takes place at a resort, even if you are not staying there. The proper term would be not inside the parks - the resorts are all on property - you just don't need admission tickets for them.

Your options for a resort character meal are -

Cape May Cafe Breakfast at The Beach Club
Chef Mickey's Breakfast or Dinner at The Contemporary
1900 Park Fare Breakfast or Dinner at The Grand Floridian
'Ohana Breakfast at The Polynesian
Garden Grove Breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays at The Swan (may not the best option since they usually only have two characters - all the others have at least three)

yeah you could go to the one at the GF or the ohana breakfast or chef mickeys there are alot at the resorts :)

The only character meals that are not at Disney resorts are at the Swan/Dolphin (which might as well be Disney resorts, character dinner nightly, breakfast on weekends at Garden Grove) and the Hilton (breakfast only).

You can also go to any Disney resort. You don't have to be staying there and you don't need any sort of admission, but you should think about making a reservation if you choose one, because these meals are VERY popular. Remember that you'll have to leave a credit card guarantee and you have to cancel a day ahead of time to avoid being charged $10 per person. If your thinking is that the off property ones may be less chaotic, then that may be so, because they're not on the dining plan.
