We are planning to make reservations at Blue Bayou (F! package for our first night). I would like to do one other reservation but I am torn between Lamplight Lounge (as a first timer) and a character brunch at Storytellers (or maybe Goofy's Kitchen). We are:
  • Family of 3 - two adults, one 4yo
  • 1st time DLR, WDW vets
  • Son enjoyed crystal palace - Pooh and friends brunch
  • We don't enjoy deep fried / fast food style meals - otherwise game on
We can either book a character brunch the morning of OBB or a dinner reservation before OBB starts (or another day we are actually in the parks). Which do you prefer?

***ETA: I have read both good and bad about all of these so a little confused.

Personally I would choose Lamplight but that’s because I love the restaurant and the food, and also because I’m not really a buffet person. I simply don’t eat enough to make a $50/person buffet worth it and I don’t really like mass-produced buffet food as much as made to order at a restaurant. I also don’t like serving myself and touching all the same service utensils as a 100 other people are the buffet. 🤢

That said, I’ve also done Storytellers and I think it’s pretty good for a buffet. The food is better than other buffets I’ve experienced and you can get small plates from your server in addition to the buffet. And the character interactions were great with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Chip and Dale the day we went. If someone really wanted to do a buffet that is the one I would recommend.

We're not exactly buffet people either but if the interaction was worth it for my little guy I would totally do it. :earsboy:

That is exactly why I did it. My entire family had covid for Christmas (😩) and once we had the all clear I took my boys to Storytellers to celebrate. They loved the characters! And they also enjoyed the food. I did too so bonus there. Too expensive? Yes, but it was perfect that day.

I should point out that those awesome small plates (including the filled beignets pictured above) were only available at brunch, not breakfast. Brunch is 11am onward.

We had a lot of interaction, characters came by at least 7 times. I paid $250ish for 2+2 kids and probably some portion of one of my siblings. Loved the chilaquillas (?) and the omelette too.

I paid $100 for a small snack and drinks for all 4 of us, 2 alcoholic, at Lamplighter.

I’m cheap. I spent a lot this trip, unusual for me. Something about trying to give your kid the perfect trip. Lol But I found a lot more value in the buffet. Enjoyment level, I believe. It was just our family at LL and our whole fam of 10 at the buffet, but I didn’t get much interaction with the other end of the table. I think the characters had the biggest impact. My kids enjoyed it much more. All they could really eat at LL was gf fries. They didn’t need a whole meal and there were no appropriate snacks. One tolerated the experience on a tablet the whole time.

I haven't been to LL, but brunch at Storytellers was lovely pre-covid. Characters were attentive and frequent. The restaurant is beautiful and upscale not loud, buffet style. Also at brunch there are many small plates you can order now, so not just buffet. Since BB is more for the adults, I say do the characters for your son. He will love it.

We booked the Storytellers brunch (11:15) on checkout day so that we could do the small plates as well as the buffet. And actually, I'm most excited about the small plates! We're two adults only, but we find character breakfasts to be enjoyable and I've heard good things about the food.

I haven't done Goofy's in years, but the thing I remember about it is that it was so loud. I don't do loud venues well, so it's out for us. And if we're going to spend that kind of money anyway (or close to it at Lamplight), I want an all you care to enjoy character experience.

I agree with Storytellers/Character Brunch. I love Lamplight (though I prefer brunch menu over dinner or lunch there) but especially if you are also doing BB the character brunch will be a good balance for your 4yo.

I also generally prefer Storytellers to Goofy's, both for food and atmosphere, with the caveat that I haven't been to either post COVID.

I will be the outlier and with a young child I would pick Goofy’s. To me it’s a funner and more memorable experience for small kids. I’m not sure if Goofy is back to taking pictures in his kitchen before seating? But that is a great photo opportunity if he is.

I have not done Goofy’s. Can you share what makes it more memorable for kids compared to other character meals?

It’s my opinion so others might disagree. The idea behind Goofy’s Kitchen is that Goofy runs the kitchen with his friends, and that is a really fun idea for kids. The restaurant is decorated bright and colorful like you would imagine Goofy would decorate, and this also makes it more memorable for kids. Before you sit down you get to take a picture with Goofy in his kitchen, and the photo pass is included with the meal. It is great to meet the chef himself as you enter and have him welcome you. The food has more variety than the other buffets and has fun additions like peanut butter and jelly pizza, because that is the type of fun thing Goofy would create. They also serve pizza, mac and cheese, and chicken tenders at breakfast, because of course, Goofy. So I think that the theming and environment is better for small kids and more memorable. Especially if the adults are reinforcing that Goofy runs the restaurant and designed everything the way he wants it. Also, I will say that the soft serve ice cream they have there is delicious. People can knock the food all they want, but the soft serve is some of the best I have ever had (and I really like soft serve ice cream).

Having done all of your options:

For a 4 year old, I would not recommend Lamplight. The food is good, but not that special.

Goofy's Kitchen. I think would be fun for your 4 year old (assuming no fear of characters). It can be quite chaotic here with all the character and guest movement.

Storyteller's. Again, I think it would be fun. I will say that I find this option to be more relaxed.

Your call really.

I think Lamplight is a great place for a couple to have a great cocktail and apps or a meal. We have teenagers now, and they love it too. The setting is amazing, just a cool vibe, and a lot of Pixar memorabilia to look at.

When our kids were young like yours is now, we would not have taken them there because it is not a fast place on service, and the vibe is not great for little kids. There is not much, if anything really, for young kids to do but sit quietly at the table and eat. They could look out at Incredicoaster and the Wheel from afar, but that wouldn't entertain most 4 year olds for very long. I would feel uncomfortable as a parent with a young child there, as it is not a place that a little kid running around while the adults eat would be typical. I would definitely recommend a character meal with your kiddo, and then an adult's visit to Lamplight, if you have someone who can stay back with your child. We have done Storyteller's a few times when the girls were younger, and they loved it. The characters are very interactive, and the kids are entertained constantly. I am not a fan of buffets at all, but you do what you have to do for the kids! And it gives them a chance to try new foods, which at 4 years old is important. I have not done Goofy's, so I can't compare the two, but I would definitely do a character meal!

We absolutely love Blue Bayou, but again, we did not start going there until our girls were in Middle School. It is not a "kids running around" vibe at all. It is very quiet so you can hear the crickets chirp in the "bayou". It is dark in there as well. I would highly recommend going there, just not with a 4 year old.

As for doing your character meal on a park day or on OBB day, I would do OBB day if that party is the only park time you will be doing that day. A park day is usually long and busy, so doing a character meal either chews up the early part of the park day when ride waits are the lowest, or you do it later in the day and risk a tired, cranky kiddo. I think lunch on OBB day is great, if your kid will sleep in that morning (mine never would) because then you might make it until later that night for the full OBB. If you do breakfast on OBB day, your kid may fizzle out early evening, just when you want to see and do all of the OBB stuff!

Sounds fun, we will have to try it one day.
