I use Junie B. Jones as an introduction to chapter books in my 1st grade classroom. They are loved by all and really spark the kids' interest in reading.
Another book that I read aloud to them is Ramona the Brave by Beverly Cleary. We complete a huge unit on this book- I read a chapter a day out loud to them and they write in their journals about the chapter. They usually write about the main idea of the chapter or their favorite part. They also illustrate their writing. I always tell them the name of the next chapter- it creates suspense, especially the chapter titled "Ramona Says a Bad Word" Imagine their surprise when the word is "guts"!!!
After the book is finished my students design a new cover. I staple the cover to their journal writings and they have a wonderful book that they can use to retell the story, chapter by chapter, to a loved one at home. So fun!
I second Ramona the Brave. I loved that book as a child so much that when I went away to college my mother stuck a copy in my dorm room so I'd always have it close by. Also Ramona the Pest, and Beezus and Ramona.
Also by Beverly Clearly, Mouse and the Motorcycle, Henry Huggins. The All of a Kind Family series is a wonderful series, if not a little old fashioned (which some girls may love, others not). My boys loved the Harry Potter series read to them since they were teeny tiny, again, some kids might, others might not.
