Channel Tunnel Fire

Eek: lots of people due to travel today...

kiafrika 8th - 12th Hotel Cheyenne
melanie5 8th - 12th Davy Crockett Ranch
MJ_always 7th - 12th Newport Bay Club
PatriciaH 12th - 13th
disneyangel 12th - 16th Etap/Marriott

Let's just hope that they're all flying or sailing across the channel.

I ditto what ukstitch has said!

My ears pop an awful lot on the Eurostar - even more so now that they've added the extra tunnels from St. Pancras :)

We noticed it was a lot worse after the move to St Pancras too!

Let's just hope that they're all flying or sailing across the channel.

Sending them all some pixiedust: Hopefully they will drop by the DIS and reassure us that all is okay.

I really feel for anyone who is affected by this incident - though it could have been so much worse!

I was walking through St Pancras last night at about 8pm, it was such a scene. Some people crying, some people shouting and angry, some laying on the floor sleeping, some acting as it were a refugee camp, with lot's of police and staff.

The eary part is as I went upstair to get my train home, the Eurotunnel platforms were empty. Very eerie as there is always something going on there. Before I heard the news, I was worried it was terrorist activity.

I would be soooooo upset if my eurostar was cancelled! Don't think I could complain if i was stuck at disney lol the AP's would have really got some extra use! Sending lots of :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to people travelling soon

I hope everyone who is travelling today or in the very near future manage to get across the channel.

I'd hate for anyone to have to cancel their holiday because of this fire. Bet Bob is glad she is going by ferry!

OK, just another quick update:

According to the Sky News site, they are hoping to start running 1 tunnel operation "soon" (it suggests 1/2 capacity could occur at some time today, but I guess that would only apply to Eurotunnel) as the south tunnel is apparently completely intact. If this is the case, then hopefully Eurostar will follow suit tomorrow or equally soon.

It does also mention, however, that the north tunnel will be closed for "several" weeks, so I guess they'll have to run reduced services or suffer huge delays trying to cross the channel for quite a while.

Hi guys!

Just to let you know, we have also booked a ferry crossing. Luckly my boyfriends friends are going to DLRP at the same time, so we are lift sharing with them.

We are hoping to get on the Eurostar, but we have booked just in case.

I am scared witless!

Thank goodness no-one was seriously hurt or worse died. Then to top it the awful shock for all the people on holiday with XL. :(

:grouphug: for everyone due to travel soon. :wizard:

That's some good news then. At least you have a backup plan. Fingers crossed that you still manage to get on the Eurostar

They are saying on Sky News now that the fire has been put out. Good luck to all those going soon.

I am going on the 15th Sep, we are trying to stay positive in this house:thumbsup2 .
My Husband works for Network Rail, he said that there won't be much damage done to the track or the overhead lines as they are copper. The problem will be with the actual lining of the tunnel.
If he gets anymore info when he gets in work I will let you know.
I have checked Ferry prices just in case:confused3 :confused3

If you are travelling with Eurotunnel, they have an allience with the ferries that should something goes wrong like this they will send you to the ferries. It shouldn't cost you anything extra. It only works with people who have holidays booked & not day trips.

The only problem with that is the ferries are likely to have a bit of a backlog unless they were not fully booked in the first place.

Its worth giving Eurotunnel a call to find out.

I hope everyone who is travelling soon, manages to get across without any problems.

They are now saying that the fire has not been fully put out.

They need to make there minds up.

::yes::

Have just been over reading the UK TP board.....

Just watching the news and they have said that they hope to reopen the South tunnel by tonight now the fire is out and that it should take serverals week to get the North tunnel open again... so they will be a redcued serviced but given the time of year it should be manageable.

I was just about to book the chunnel for my trip next month..but decided to go pand o instead..

My miserable other half has just told me that the tunnel would be closed for approx 6 months because considerable damage was done in the fire.
Has anyone else heard that?
I hope he's just winding me up because I'd feel sorry for everyone who has crossings booked via the tunnel. We were originaly going by the tunnel but it worked out cheaper to fly from Newcastle with Easy Jet... I hope everyone else can get to DLP safely.

If the other part of the tunnel is undamaged then they can start services again, with delays etc while the other tunnel is being fixed.

Its a case of waiting to see what damage has been done before any announcements can be made.

I reckon it will be a few days to find out how much damage has been caused.

I would be surprised if there wasn't any due to the intensity of the fire & the length it was alight.

Maybe they should install a sprinkler system in the tunnels if this happens again...thats if they don't already have any.

You'd have thought they would have had something like that in place, obviously not though.
