Changing UY Points on Current Reservation?

I have a reservation for Dec. 2014. I have used all my 2014 points for this reservation. We have decided to take a short trip to DW this summer. I don't have any points available, but can borrow points for my December reservation just not this summer. Will MS change where points are coming from for a reservation without canceling and rebooking? I cannot do that as there are no more rooms for my Dec. reservation. Thank you for any information you can provide!

If I understand you correctly, you want to book a summer trip, but want to borrow 2014 points. But all your 2014 points are booked for Dec. And assume you have a Fall UY.

I don't know that MS can do this, but here's what I would do in a round about way. Book a trip in your 2014 UY by borrowing the exact number of points you need from 2015. So if you need 55pts for summer, find a booking after Dec that costs 55pts and borrow them from 2015. Then call MS to cancel the new booking, have them reallocate your Dec booking to use the borrowed points first - this can be done without risking your Dec reservation. If you get an MS who says otherwise, ask for a supervisor.

That will free up 55 2014 UY points that you can then borrow for summer.

I believe this is the only way to do it. The points have to be there in order to reallocate and the only time you can borrow is to book so your suggestion should work.

Let me see if I am understanding this correctly. I have a December UY. I currently have a December reservation using the points I will be getting in December. I would like to go in July of this year, but do not have any 2013 points. I could make a reservation for sometime in 2015 borrowing from my 2015 points, then cancel and use those for my July 2014 reservation. When I cancel, can they reallocate to use for a 2013 UY reservation? I figured they would stay 2014. It gets so confusing when I have a Dec. UY because I am basically always a year behind.

You almost have it. Book online a room from Jan 10-14, 2015 by borrowing 2015 points. Call MS to cancel Jan 10-14, 2015 reservation. Ask them to reallocate points for your Dec reservation to use the borrowed points first, thereby freeing up 2014 points which can be borrowed or banked. Then make a July 2014 reservation by borrowing the freed up 2014 points.

You just have to figure out what room to book in Jan to total up to close to what you need in July. It's likely you'll have to borrow more from 2015 than you need for July 2014. But that's ok because you can bank the extra points that are freed from the 2014 UY.

And now I know why I sometimes see resales that have banked points from 2013 available, no points from 2014, and half the points coming in 2015!

Your point is valid. In essence, DVC chose between two evils. One was making members do convoluted things like this, when they needed to reschedule trips involving banked and borrowed points.

The other alternative would have been DVC not having the rules preventing you from reversing a banking or borrowing transaction. If those rules were not in place, it would be easier to shuffle your reservations around- but it would also put more potential stress on a given calendar year of activity. If all members could continually move three years' worth of points in and out, any given year would have more booking pressure. It seems the non-reversal rules mitigate this to some degree.

And, I would think that the situations when one would need to do as the OP needs to are far less than as you said, given everyone free reign to just move points regardless of status.

At least, right now, MS will reallocate the points into a given reservation without making it a cancel/rebook...

I'm not saying it's a bad thing...I just didn't understand the situation where you would have banked points from a prior year, no points from the current year, and some of the next year's borrowed points.
