Changing room categories - how does pricing work?

I am taking the 12 night Med next summer and booked my family of 4 in a GTY oceanview - IF a verandah room opens, I need to call for the right cost, correct? If I understand correctly, I get the price it would have been had it been available when I originally booked - is that right? If it matters, when I originally booked, GTY was the best category available.

I also am taking my parents with us - same question - if I move them around, do I get the rate I would have gotten if that category was available day of booking? For them, it may be moving to an inside state room (they don't mind and in fact think they might sleep through jet lag better in the dark).

Does it matter if you are upgrading vs. downgrading categories?

Thanks!!

If you change room categories on the same sailing, you are locked into whatever the cost was at the time you make the original booking.

Doesn't matter up- or downgrade. Now, if you downgrade, and you've already paid more than the new room cost, I'm not sure they refund the money, but I think they just give it to you as onboard credit.

You do not need to call them. You can change your stateroom online.
Only if you did not use a placeholder. If you use a placeholder discount, you have to call to change rooms, even within the same category, to keep the 10% off. We experienced this recently--changing rooms online would have forced us to pay full price, but calling allowed us to keep the discount. Very weird.

This is not always true. I was able to change my room once from Inside to Inside online. When I wanted to change to oceanview, I could not do it online (I even tried every single different browser option I could find as well as the app).

I then decided to move down the hall a little closer to elevators when something opened up. It was an oceanview to oceanview, and I had to call again.

No one could explain to me why I couldn’t make changes online. It wasn’t after PIF date either.

So, be prepared to call if you see something available online, and you cannot get it to work.
