Changing from package to room only - how does this affect my tickets?

I just can't wait the 3 hours to talk to a person on the Disney phone line right now. I have a package booked right now, and I understand that if I have more ticket days than hotel days, I can continue to visit the parks after I have checked out of the hotel but can't start visiting the parks on the days before I check into the hotel. We are going to be in Florida and local before we check into our Disney hotel, though, and I am thinking about splitting into a room only + tickets reservation instead of a package. This is how we have actually done it in the past, but I know things have changed and we haven't been in a few years, plus stuff has changed since our last trip. Would this mean that we can then visit the parks before we check into our Disney hotel, even if the tickets are loaded into MDE? Like if we are checking into the Disney hotel on Saturday we can still go to the parks the Wednesday prior as long as we have ticket days and a reservation?

You don't have to wait on the phone.

Cancel the package, book a room, buy tickets.

That is assuming you are more than 30 days out, and going at a time when the park reservation calendar is wide open (which is the entire calendar other than October 1, after mid-April).

Make sure you have a long enough use-window on the tickets to last through your reservation if you will set a start date 3 days prior to arrival.
