Changing ADRs from 5 to 2?

I guess many have gone this route before- spend forever choosing when and where to eat and then booking it far in advance (going in December) and then hearing that your friends may have to cancel (at least they gave me plenty of warning). If they in fact do have to cancel, do I have any chance rescheduling to 2 or do we just show up and say "2, not 5 anymore"? None of the restaurants require a credit card to hold, but I don't want anyone not to get a reservation because of this.

I would try to book for 2 now - you can't just change, you have to have a different reservation. You could just show up I guess, but I think it's better to have the correct number in the party (at least close to it). Like, it doesn't matter if it's 1 or 2, or 3 or 4 - the table size is the same. The table size between 2 and 5 is very different.
