Hello, my dh was just offered a new job (:yay:) but we have a family trip to DW in November. His new employer said that they can not let him take that time off so we are looking to change our dates to accommodate his new career. We booked airfare long before he applied for this position with Spirit Airlines and were wondering how they are with switching flights. Anyone have experience with this?

They charge a substantial fee to change the flight, you will likely loose all of that money. I would alert the employer and ask for compensation. The fee is $120 per ticket. Spirit is fine to fly until you need to change anything or need customer service at all, then they are awful.

So the first thing you do when you get a new job where they told you that they could not accommodate your request is request compensation? Hmmm.....

I do think it would have been reasonable to accommodate a previously scheduled vacation and I have for all of my hires, but if you were told that was part of the condition for taking the job I don't think you should ask for the new employer to pay.

Sadly with Sprint I expect your best bet is to consider those funds lost.

It is pretty steep to change or cancel with spirit. I wanted to change my incoming flight and I was more expensive to do so than I actually paid for the whole flight. May as well just let that slide.

The only suggestion I have is to keep an eye on the flight schedule. The only time I booked with Spirit (in 2009), we had a one-way flight that was scheduled to depart at 8:30am. I got a notice that it had changed to 11am, which was no problem, but I did not accept the change. I didn't decline it, I just didn't do anything about it. Then, AirTran (our preferred airline) had a price-drop which made their fare lower than Spirit's. I figured I was out of luck, until Spirit changed the flight again...to a 3pm departure. Even though I figured I wouldn't get anywhere, I called and explained that the new flight time was almost 7 hours different than what I had originally booked and it was not going to work for me. I asked for a refund which they gave me without hesitation. I was stunned! IIRC, the phone call took less than 10 minutes and the full amount was quickly returned to my credit card.

Now, this was 7 years ago and I'm sure a lot has changed. It may be your only chance at a refund, but at this point, it's your best option to avoid a huge fee or a complete loss of the funds you've already paid.

Agree with this. I have always granted that my new hires can keep their scheduled vacation, most have alerted me in the interview with so it's information I have before I even decide to hire. That said, if there was a conflict with what we needed to hire them for and a vacation, and they accepted the job knowing that the vacation was not approved in order to take the job, and then asked me for compensation, that would be a huge red flag for me. I would not recommend that path. Not that the OP said that was the case but still. Don't do that.

Spirit is probably not going to be super flexible, unfortunately. Its probably going to end with eating the cost of the tickets.

Total bummer there OP but hopefully the new job opportunity is worth it and you guys can shrug this off eventually.

If I had just offered a job to someone while being very up front with them that they would not be able to keep the scheduled vacation for whatever reason and they accepted this as a condition of new employment, I would not look at it well if they then came back and asked that I compensate them for it. The person was given an option; job without the vacation OR they could have passed on the offer.

OP, I would just eat the change fee. That, or go without him. There is nothing wrong with that either.

In the past DH has actually likes it when DS and I go off somewhere when DH is starting a new job or in a very busy time. Lets him focus.

That said, has DH asked his supervisor about it, or just the HR person? My husband has found that the actual boss has been more lenient than the one with the offer. Once the job has started.

If it's not possible though, the change fees are likely on the site or in your confirmation email.
