Is it a problem to change a ressie from a 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom or studio? We're going to WDW in Sept and are a group of 7. 3 of the people may not come now. I'm thinking that if that's the case we wasted a heck of a lot of points for just my family of four! If it's available, do they let you change?!?!?! I won't know for sure if they're backing out for a little while but wanted to know in advance what your experiences are. Thanks in advance.

Shelby :rolleyes2

Yes, you can change your reservation at any time prior to arrival (subject to availability). If you make the change at least 31 days prior to arrival, the excess points just go back into your account. If your banking deadlines permit, you may bank them.

If you make the change 30 days or less prior to arrival, the excess points go back into your account, but they are now in "holding" status. That means they expire at the end of the use year (can't be banked) and can only be used to make a reservation for a stay that is 60 days or less from the date you call to make the reservation.

If you make the change less than 5 days prior to arrival, you forfeit the excess points.

Best wishes -

What happens if some of the points were borrowed? We basically used this year's points and next year's points. (with a little leftover) So, if we were to change it, would they be put back into our account as if they were from the 2007 points? (in other words, there would be no need to bank them) ??????

Shelby

You would have to first use the points that were borrowed. They cannot be put back. If you have some current years points left and if you are still in the banking time, you can bank the points that were this use years.

Another thing to note is that the days must be available in the smaller unit. You cannot simply drop off part of your unit to cut it down to the size you want. You must cancel and rebook. So if there is a waiting list for any of those days, you go back to the bottom of that list.

Thanks, but it looks like it's going to work out the way we originally planned!

Things changed so we changed our booking. A 1 bedroom was available. There was no need to cancel and re-book, they just changed my ressie. I was off the phone in about 2 min and all is changed!!! We're now staying in a 1 bedroom just the 4 of us and SUPER excited!!!

Since 2 bedrooms are basically a one bedroom plus a studio, couldn't you just book a 2 bedroom lock-off? Then when you found out the others couldn't come for sure you could switch to a one bedroom and a studio would just open up? I know you are already switched to a one bedroom but I am just wondering if this would work.

I had wondered that myself but the people who were going with us have pretty much said they cannot go. So, I didn't want to waste time and possibly have there be a problem in switching. So, we took care of it today. There's no chance of them being able to join us so I thought this was the best solution.

That is a cancelation and rebooking.

I asked the woman, do I need to cancel and rebook? She said NO. I'll just change it, your reservation # stays the same. If I canceled and rebooked wouldn't my number have changed? Bottom line, she told me that's not how it's done (canceling and rebooking). I'm just saying what I was told.

I wasn't attempting to correct you when you said that in a previous post, just stating what I was told by MS.

DVC will only do this if there is not a waiting list. If members are on the wait list for a 1 bedroom or a studio, they would be next in line.

Thankfully (and surprisingly) there was availability!!! :cool1:  What a relief!!

She was applying different meanings to the words than we've used here. The issue is that had there not been availability you would not have been able to do this. That's not to say it hasn't happened, it actually has. DVC changed their interpretation in this area a few years ago. But like anything Disney, you may get different answers on different calls. So if you really need something that is not cut and dried and get an answer you don't want, it never hurts to call back as many times you'll get someone who will do exactly what you want. BTW, this approach works with II exchanges as well though to a lessor degree through DVC than directly.
