Changing a reservation using different points

I currently have '09 & '10 points from the same resort being used for a studio. I want to call to see if I can change it to a 1 bedroom using '09 points from a different resort (I'm past the 7 month mark) and the points currently tied up in the studio. If I can make the change, what's the best way to do this with the least amount of risk in potentially losing a reservation completely?

Thanks!!!

Unless you have enough points to book the one bedroom without cancelling your original reservation, you will have to cancel the original reservation before booking the one bedroom...and yes, there is the potential to be out of a room completely. No way around it. The points have to be in the account and available beofre a reservation can be made.

Thanks for the quick reply; I was pretty sure that was the answer, but just wanted to do a double check 1st.

You can ask about availablility of the sort of villa you want and then decide if it's worth the risk.

We just did this type of "point reallocation" last month...

If the existing reservation was made at 7-months (or later)--i.e., not made between 11 and 7 months, they can reallocate points w/out canceling the existing reservation.

If, however, it is a reservation made w/home resort priority (between 11 and 7 months), then they do have to cancel & rebook...

In our case, it got even more complicated since there were also transferred, borrowed and banked points involved...but the CM worked it out and was incredibly pleasant about doing so. I was dealing with 4 separate reservations, one of which was made w/home resort priority (and included T-giving, so it couldn't be touched)...she wound up reallocating so I used my transferred-in points and my borrowed points, leaving me some current year points to bank to use for next year's T-giving reservation...

Not sure I could have done it on my own...it was complicated! But the CM made it very clear that none of the reservations (made at 7 months or later) were being canceled and rebooked to do the reallocation--and we decided early-on not to touch the T-giving reservation (made at 11 months) to avoid having to cancel & rebook...

Good luck w/your "project!"

But in the case of the OP, they are wanting to change room types, studio to one bedroom, not just a point reallocation for the resevation. They have to have enough points to book the one bedroom, or else they will need to cancel the studio first to free up the points.

Just thought I'd add that I took the chance and called MS Tuesday to see about making my changes. A 1-bedroom was available and I had a good vibe the CM would complete the reservation as I wanted. All worked well so we will be staying in a 1-bedroom for our 1st Disneyland and DVC stay !The only problem will be settling for studio stays in the future ;).
