I think its great news.. I for one, love the dining plan.. and I pre-plan my 180 days in advance, but find myself tweeking throughout the planning. I think this is will help me keep what I orginally had.. and I like that.. Also, I think it will definitely open up more ressies for those wanting those hard to get restaurants..

It is about time.
And for those who don't like it and want to "blame" Disney, it is a result of all of the selfish folks who booked many ADR's "Just in Case". Blame them

I understand where Disney is coming from with this new policy. And generally speaking, I dont have a problem with it. I think it will make some of the hard to get ressie's, a little easier to snag. On the other hand, what if a sickness is to blame, if someone isn't feeling well enough to make one of our reservations? While this has happened to us before,we cancel the ADR as soon as possible, but sometimes it isnt 24 hours before. It's just the 2 of us, and if one is a little under the weather, the other will just grab some QS at the resort. I'm wondering if this policy will have some kinks to be ironed out?
All in all, I think this new policy will be great, for those (clearly not DISers!!) that aren't considerate of others by canceling a ressie that you know you do not need/will not use. We will see! I look forward to seeing how this will play out once in effect!

Yes, this exactly.

Most of us are traveling with little ones (it is Disney World after all) and little ones are prone to sudden stomach ills. We've also had the experience of our DD getting sick in the AM and not being able to make a PM ressie.

Overall it sounds like a very good thing to me.

Following is the official notice on The Hub

To provide consistent Guest service, adjustments will be made to the Walt Disney World Resort cancellation policy beginning October 26, 2011. At that time, additional table-service locations will begin using the cancellation policy already in place at select restaurants on property. When booking a reservation at these restaurants, Guests will be required to provide a credit card to hold a reservation and will be charged $10 per person if the cancellation isn’t made at least one day in advance.

Pre-paid locations will continue to retain the full, pre-paid amount if Guests are unable to honor the reservation and are unable to cancel the reservation one day in advance. Special dining events and packages such as Fantasmic! packages, New Year’s Eve dinners, Victoria & Albert’s reservations may have different cancellation requirements.

Dining locations participating in the credit card guarantee policy will be as follows:

Pre-Paid Locations

• Cinderella’s Royal Table
• Disney’s Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show
• Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue
• Mickey’s Backyard BBQ

Credit Card Guarantee Locations

• 1900 Park Fare
• Akershus Royal Banquet Hall
• Artist Point
• California Grill
• Cape May Café
• Chef Mickey’s
• Cítricos
• The Crystal Palace

• The Garden Grill
• Hollywood & Vine
• Jiko – The Cooking Place
• Le Cellier Steakhouse
• Narcoossee’s

Disney will waive a cancellation fee for an illness....

I fully agree and just hope they use this policy for all restaurants.

Does this apply to Ohana dinner & Cape May Dinner or only their breakfasts which are teh only character meals at these restaurants?

Definitely no ADRs now on arrival day - too easy to have a flight/traffic delay.

And how many dining reviews have I read where people on DxDP ate breakfast and lunch and realized they just couldn't face dinner too? They generally *say* that they called and cancelled the ADR (no way of knowing whether they did or not, of course) but since it was a same-day cancellation they will incur charges under the new plan. In fact, Disney has taken away any incentive to same-day cancel rather than no-show since the financial penalty is now the same.

I AM glad to see that the other restaurants are not being officially labeled "Signature" (implying a new 2-credit cost) as the OP's first source said.

Closing this and referring to the Restaurant Reservations Board where this information is now posted.

It's all Disney-operated restaurants that offer 1) signature dining or 2) character dining. So it is not being limited to just signature restaurants. And it does appear it will apply to all meals at these restaurants.
