Changes to reservation, reschedule vs cancel ?

I have a hypothetical question as far as cancellations or changes to dates. I failed to purchase travel insurance before the deadline and couldn't with the particular offer I've booked anyway. My question is...say it is a day before our check in date and we can't go. Can I #1 just change my dates without losing any money? Or #2 cancel and get my money back minus the deposit? I booked through a TA if that makes any difference... They are an authorized Disney TA though and I assume their cancelation policy is the same as booking through Disney? I have no plans to cancel/reschedule at the moment, and probably won't, but it would be very last minute if I did. If I make sense. TIA!

I called the Disney reservations number the day we were to check in this last April in a panic because we thought the trip would have to be canceled that day. The cast member who helped me was so kind and reassuring. Even day of he was offering to push the trip out to a further date so we wouldn't lose any money. He said the only snag is that the hotels will sometimes check in guests early morning before they have arrived and if that had happened there would be a fee involved. Thankfully we got our circumstances straightened out and jumped on the plane to enjoy our trip.

Disney wants you to come and spend your money, They will bend over backwards to make sure that happens.

You can more than likely do either - Disney has always been more than accommodative when I need to move dates, and if you choose to cancel the trip all together, you will lose your deposit but nothing else.

Thank you both for the reply! I appreciate it.
Would me using a TA cause a problem?

If the OP has a package and cancels 2 or more days prior to arrival, the penalty is the $200 deposit. However, cancelling a package 1 day prior to arrival is subject to the entire package amount being forfeited. Below is a link from Mousesavers on cancellations:

For RO, a cancellation would result in the forfeit of the deposit.

Using a TA shouldn't cause any problems as far as modifying or cancelling, but he/she will have to contact Disney. Since the TA technically "owns" the reservation until you check in, Disney will not discuss the reservation with you. Any modifications or a cancellation would have to be done by the TA.

But Disney VERY often works with people to reschedule even packages, so that people don't lose the money.

Thank you for that info! I probably wouldn't even cancel if we cannot go. I know we would want to go asap, so I would definitely want to just change our dates if they would let me.

You're welcome :).

You shouldn't have any trouble changing dates if the original dates don't work. As the pp said, Disney is usually very accommodating when guests need to modify their reservation, even if it is close to arrival. I just wanted you to know what the policy states ;).

I appreciate it! Today is actually my 45 day mark lol and for some reason I thought about trip insurance last night! I always worry too much. Hopefully, we will be able to go and have a great time.

I know it's already been clearly stated but I just wanted to say that was the same in my recent experience. The cast member who was trying to help us find a solution did say that if we flat out cancel (day of) then we lost all $.

I hope everything works out and you are able to take the trip :wizard:.

You can still purchase insurance, just not through Disney. You can purchase from an independent company. It won't cover pre-existing conditions, but it would be better than nothing.

That's what my TA suggested also. I am on the fence about it, however. I've purchased insurance in the past and never even used it. I am just nervous we may get down there and have to come home earlier than scheduled (due to current issues) or we may find out a day before we are supposed to check in that we can't go. I could be completely overreacting though and worrying for no reason.
