Change UY Before Buying?

In your case your Dec trips will be the only ones you may have trouble with and as long as you can reschedule or rent you'll be OK.

In our case, we travel Oct, Nov Dec and our banking deadline is Sept:( so we're switching to an AUG UY.

They will let you switch. When we bought in we wanted a Sept or Oct UY since due to farming we cant go no sooner then late August or November and we practically begged for one of these UY and out guide said nope can only take what they are selling and gave us June. I don't like it for cancelling purposes. We want to add on this trip is there anyway that we could get it changed you think???

DVC isn't letting me switch, I'm selling my Feb UY and purchasing Aug UY. It's a very costly mistake on my part for not understanding how the UY worked when we first purchased. It wasn't so bad before DVC changed the banking deadlines, but now it could catch us with a good number of points we wouldn't be able to use if we had to cancel a trip after our bankng deadline.

I didn't want our add-on for the Grand Californian on our Feb UY so we took the plunge with the new 100 point buy in with AKV for an Aug UY.

Ok I see now. Thank you for clarrifying that for me. We still are not overly thrilled that we ended up with a June use year but since we live in Canada and our Province isn't registered we have to do all our transactions when we are in Florida. Therefore we really didn't have a choice since the only use year our guide was willing to offer us was June. Oh well hopefully it won't be that big of an issuefor us.

...and I was able to change to a Sept. UY! Very excited. I think a Dec. UY would have been fine, but I feel quite a bit better with this, though I know our vacation schedules will change over the years.

I'm glad for you now you will feel better about it. I just can't help but wonder why we were not given the choice to pick our UY when we asked. Maybe this is a new thing who knows. Anyways congrats!!!!! :)

DVC sales doesn't offer the choice of a new as there is usually limited points available of UY they've already sold. It never hurts to ask though!

Have you considered moving your vacation schedule to August? I have no idea when your school year starts... but if you took annual August trips... your use year would be perfect!

That's honestly my problem. We have 390 points at SSR. When we purchased, we had 120 '05 points, 337 '06 points, and all '07 points coming. We have always carried points over because we had banked points to begin with when we purchased the contracts. I would LOVE to travel in Aug, but haven't been able to because my points expire 7/31. It forces me to vacation in July.

Now, if I take a big trip and wipe out all banked points, then I could travel anytime during the summer without issue. The downside to that scenario is that if I wanted to travel in July, I'd have to borrow the points and if I had to cancel, I would have no time to use them, as they would expire. Like I said, I could always do trip insurance, but for our travel, I agree that a Dec UY is pretty much ideal for the teachers out there. It covers Dec, March and June/July/Aug trips wonderfully.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. :goodvibes I'm open to anything that will help, as I don't want to sell and re-purchase. That's costly to do, but I have really toyed around with the idea lately. :(

Don't blame yourself about the UY......at the tour we took, our guide repeatedly said UY didn't matter, even went to great lengths about it. Maybe she had to push the current UY that were for sale, but I feel they speak too lightly about it. I bet they still are. Would be curious if anyone has gone to a sales pitch lately. You are living with the contract, do what you have too. Its water under the bridge, you will be much happier in the long run. And its not your fault!:wizard:

Instead of banking... rent-out the points for $12 each... and you are now caught up. If you need (and/or want) those # of points... then rent in some points from the next use year. Then from now to eternity (or 2042/2054/2057)... you can vacation every August and have a long...long... long time to recover from any unforseen cancellations with the perfect use year for Aug trips.

I'm glad that you were able to get your UY changed. I have taught on a year-round schedule and October is a wonderful time to vacation; lower crowds and often better deals on airfare.

DH and I felt so strongly about our UY that we went on a wait list to get the UY we wanted. It's especially important for families with kids or people in the teaching profession to have a UY that allows some 'margin for error' since your vacations can't be easily rescheduled.

Now, I understand that the day will come when UY won't really matter since the kids will be grown and gone and DH and I will be retired, but for the next 20 years or more it matters a great deal!

Thanks to this thread and a couple others, I too, changed my UY. I received the original paperwork a couple of days ago and was worrying that the August UY wouldn't work well for us since we normally travel in June. I talked to my guide yesterday and new paperwork is being sent for a December UY. Now's the time to get it right -- before signing on the dotted line (I mean, at the Mickey ears).

Well even though pour guide would not give us the option of a later use year and we are stuck with June after reading this thread and seeing those of you that were givin an option I am now a little more hopeful that if we add on when we are down there later this year(unable to do it from home) that at least we possibly will be able the get add on points at AKLV with a June UY to match our current contract.:)

congrats

my nose is till out of joint as to the rule of 4 change:mad:

we specifically looked for a resale UY that would accommodate us being able to bank point points thru June (jik for semiannual trip), so we bought an October UY...now, we would be jumping thru hoops trying to rent it out due to usually banked point situtation:confused3

seriously considering selling what we have after buying into CRpopcorn::

just wonder if purchasing a complete contract, would allow us to disregard the current UY we have & select a different one?

Yes, you can pick a different UY if it's available if you purchase a new complete contract. We just did this with the new 100 point min purchase for AKV. Our SSR contracts have a Feb UY and our new AKV has an Aug UY.
