Change my use year?

I am currently in the process of signing all my mickeys and am a bit wary of my use year (October). We normally vacation june-august. An October use year doesn't give us much time to use our points should we need to cancel our summer vacation. Should I change my use year to December or March? I called my guide and she said I could do it. Those were the months she said she had available. I would not get my 2000 use year points though If I go with March. Am I actually loosing points or just getting them at a later date?

I'm sure I'm complicating this whole situation.

Thanks for your help.

To make the best decision for your family, consider how often / how likely it is that you will be need to cancel your vacation. Perhaps you have elderly parents? Children who get sick fairly often? Jobs/Bosses that are unpredictable? Etc? If the answer is not very often/likely, then the use year really doesn't matter.

If you normally vacation in the summer, a March use year would be ideal - you can bank 100% of your points by the end of August if you need to. However, if you go with March as a use year, you will be losing the 2000 use year points but paying the same amount for your DVC membership. DVC ends in January 2042 no matter when you buy.

My advice for whatever it may be worth is to go with December if it won't create a lot of hassle. (I'm thinking about the upcoming price increase and also the change coming to the MB program. You didn't say if you were taking advantage of that). With the December use year, you still get the 2000 use year points and you will have two months more (than you would with October) to bank points if the need arises. JMHO. I personally have not found use year to matter at all, but I have been able to plan 11 months ahead with a fair amount of certainty. Not everyone is in a position to do that. Good Luck on deciding what is best for your family.

We have an October use year and we usually go in Jan/Feb and it doesn't seem like it will be a problem for us.

Our 1st use year Oct 2000-2001 points we banked in to the Oct 2001-2002 use year since we won't be there till Jan/feb 2002.

Then we have double points avail for our Jan/Feb 2002 vacation and we are using them all for a AKL/DCL/BWV if there are points left over we will bank them into 2002-2003 use year.

This takes a little planning.

I don't really see why if you change to a March use year you wouldn't get your points. That part is a little confusing.

Mary,

Go with the March use year. Within the next 41 years you will be glad you did. With a March use year you have until August 31 of every year to bank 100 % of your points. If you have to cancel a summer vacation at anytime you will have plenty of time to bank all your points.

All for responding. I really appreciate your thoughts and experiences. However, I am still undecided :). I have given myself til tomor to decide.

For March 2000 the use year is over...therefore there are no 2000 points left. That is the reason she can't get those points. April and later on are still in their 2000 use year...the 2001 use year begins the first of each month as it comes. (We have a March use year...)

I'd go with December if I were in the same situation...

They usually don't let you go back farther than the 100% banking deadline. The 100% banking deadline for October 2000 points is March 31, which is why they are selling October now. Although a friend just got an add-on at HH with August 2000 points, her guide called her with a special deal.
