Change Jar Question....

We have a huge pretzel container (from Sam's Club) that we are using as our change jar for WDW. It's about 3/4 of the way full and it is quite heavy! :Pinkbounc

We're not going to WDW until December, but I was wondering.... how do you take your change in to the bank to be exchanged for dollars? Do you take it all at once or do you take it in a little bit at a time? The reason I ask is because none of the banks in our area have those machines that count the change for you (at least none that I am aware of) and I'm not sure how thrilled the tellers at our local bank would be if we brought in hundreds of dollars in change to exchange.

Thanks for your input! :goodvibes

Our bank does have a counter but they charge 5% to use it. We sit down with our change jar while watching a football game or something and just start rolling and take it all in at once.

We've banked with Bank One, before they became Chase (actually, Liberty National before they became Bank One). They provide heavy reinforced plastic bags that seal at the top and provide a receipt for the bag that normally a merchant would use. We put all the coins unwrapped in there with 2 blank deposit slips, and the branch sends it down to headquarters to be machine-counted on a specific day of the week. It is deposited in about 5 days from there. No charge or anything, and the tellers could care less.

Double-check with your own bank and see if they can count change for you. Our credit union has a change counter and does it for free. You can also roll your own and deposit the money into a special savings account. I wouldn't take rolled coins to the Disney Store. They are not obligated to take large amounts of change.

I think the OP meant that if you take your change to your bank in several trips, you can use the cash you get to purchase Disney Dollars to save for your next trip, not that you should take your rolled coins to the Disney Store.

I thought that too, but I just wanted to make it clear that she couldn't bring change to the DS :).

Dang, you guys are deep! I never read into the OP anything about going to the Disney store at all. :confused3

We're talking about O2BNWDW's post about getting Disney Dollars at the DS. Not the Original Poster's original post :earboy2:.

The kids and I sit down once a month and count/roll our change. The loose and rolled change goes back into the container until it's full. Then we take the rolled in and exchange it at the bank and put that back in the container.

We have a big ozarka type water container and once or twice a year we get wrappers and count the change and take it to the bank.

Check with your bank and ask where to take your change. Our one credit union branch has a change counter it's just not visible to the people in the lobby. Our main office has it in the lobby for easy customer use. I think you'll find that most banks have access to a change counter at their main offices at the least.

Our credit union has a change counter behind the scenes..I think alot of banks do anymore. I would just call my bank and ask. My CU charges 1% to count my change...not a big deal to me.I just take in my full jar and have them do it for me right before we leave.

We usually just roll it ourselves, it's fun to see how much is there :flower: Then we take it to the bank!

Which reminds me we have to do it soon!!!! :wizard:

If you do the pressed pennies, don't forget to save out some pennies & quarters. I can just see me taking a bunch of them to the bank one day & the next day, going back for change for pressing. ;)

Hi,
I just recently worked for Bank one(now Chase) and as a teller I can tell you that we don't really like dealing with a lot of rolled coined, If you mess up on counting it when you roll it, we have to take the loss in our drawer at the end of the day. If you do take it in to the bank already rolled try to do it on a Tuesday or Wednesday those are pretty slow days for us, I would never bring it to the bank on a Monday, Friday or Saturday...Busy, Busy :flower:

Our credit union will only accept a certain amount of rolled change w/o charges. They also charge to use the machine to count it for you.

TOYSTORYDUO,
Don't you have those machines that count the change for you in your local grocery store??

Where we live, Commerce Bank has the counting machines in the lobby for free use (even if you don't bank there). Then it spits out a receipt for you to bring the teller who will give you that amount. :teacher:

Also, the Food Emporium has a counting machine, but it charges 10% :guilty: Total ripoff!
