Chances of upgrade at WL?

What are our chances of a "complimentary upgrade" from a standard room if we mention the reason for our trip? My family is taking our mom for her 70th b'day. There will be 6 of us total and we will be getting 2 rooms. Is this asking too much of Disney? When we visited a year and a half ago at WL the CM's seemed to want to bend over backwards for us. It was a great time. What do you think?

We stayed at the WL last summer. We were there celebrating my mom finishing all of her chemo and radiation for a year long bout with breast cancer. I faxed in my room requests for a standard room. I did not ask for a free upgrade. I did state the reason we were coming to WDW. We also had two standard rooms booked. At check in the CM said we had been given a complimentary upgrade to a pool view room. We were amazed. They were so nice to us and accomodating. So go ahead and fax in your requests and the info about the birthday. I wouldn't ask for the free upgrade and just wait and see what happens. I think that CM's are great to work with but everyone shouldn't expect something for nothing. I hope you enjoy your trip and the WL. Last summer was so special for my family.

I have been to WL twice and both times we were upgraded to courtyard view. I think they really try to upgrade guests if they have the room. at more busy times it may be a little harder to get upgraded, but both of our times were at the end of July. Going this year at the same time, I hope for #3.

We are going over Memorial Day weekend. We only have a standard room booked, and don't expect that any upgrades would be available considering the time of year. However, we did think twice about buying APs. Our cost per night would remain the same, but our "view" would change from Standard to Woodsview.

But after we thought about it, we decided that we will wait to get our APs until just before the end of the year, as originally planned. We are planning 2, maybe 3 trips next year. Besides, we originally had booked a preferred room at the ASSp, so in our minds, we have already upgraded our room.;)

To those of you who have gotten an upgrade...Did you ask for them did you pay anything extra. Are they just upgrades in views? Has anyone ever gotten an upgraded view at BC? We'llbe there but our view is standard. Wondering what kind of view we could ask for...Epcot view?

In so far as upgrades, best way you can handle this is by faxing your requests and tell them why you are coming here, but as someone else posted, do not ask for a comp upgrade flat-out. First, you'll unknowing get your hopes up that it will happen and if it can't be provided (which in busy times is usually the case) you'll start off with a disappointment. Who wants that?? If you phrase it as "this is going to be a really special trip because of A, B, and C, so anyway you can help us to make it more magical would be really appreciated" takes the edge off the "gimme gimme" tone that a LOT of faxed requests have. Good CMs- which are the majority- love to make magic, and if its possible to do, it will happen.

When we went to the WL in July of 2000, I faxed a request a few days before stating that we wanted 6th floor and that it was a special trip celebrating our engagement. We paid standard room rate and were upgraded to a Courtyard view on the 6th floor, which was lovely. The only thing I didn't like about the 6th floor, as opposed to the lower floors, was that the 6th floor balconies have high walls, so when you are sitting out there you cannot see down into the courtyard, whereas the other balconies are more "open".
