Chances of getting off a wait list?

I hemmed and hawed over a late March Southern Cali ABD and finally decided we should go for it only to find they are already in waitlist mode. I'm just curious if anyone has had any luck getting off a waitlist? There would only be two of us traveling on this ABD. Thanks!
