I love Chai Tea, but wont pay for it a the coffee shop unless I am out with a friend for a cup and a chat. Does anyone make it at home, what does it take to make it? Thanks!

Sure I make it all of the time.
I boil water in a regular pot with cloves, ginger, cardamom, peppercorn, and cinnamon. I add loose black tea (or tazo chai tea bags) and let steep for 5 min. Then I add milk and strain the tea.

I'm a chai addict! Yes you can make it at home. I don't have a milk steamer yet, so I've done the next best thing. There's a little machine called the "Cocomotion", you can get it for around $20 at Walmart or Target. It whips up really good chai and cocoa. I usually use a chai mix - Big Train and Chamba Chai are good mixes, but I prefer Starbucks concentrate - with milk. You can also buy large quantities of Starbucks chai concentrate on ebay for around $30, and you can save a lot of money that way.

If you dont have all the ingredients to make it at home, you can buy these little tin cans ( rectangle shape ) and they come in loads of flavors. Just bring some water to a boil, put about 2 tablespoons in ( i use half the can :surfweb: ) and stir it. Instant chai tea :hyper:

The brand is general foods international. They dont cost much and are DELICIOUS.

My DH makes it on the stovetop.

He googled Chai Tea recipes and got a few different recipes.

Here's one that he found. It was on an Indian food/culture website.

1 1/2 cups water
1 inch stick of cinnamon
8 cardomom pods
8 whole cloves (we used chopped up ones instead)
2/3 cup milk
6 tsp sugan

3 teaspoons any unperfumed loose black tea

Put the water in a saucepan. Add the cinnamon, cardomom and cloves. Bring to a boil. Cover, turn heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the milk and sugar and bring to a simmer again. Throw in the tea leaves, cover and turn off the heat.

After two minutes strain the tea into two cups and serve immmediately.

Cardamom can be substituted with ginger or cinnamon. We also can use a licorice type spice.

Starbucks uses Tazo brand chai concentrate mix. Seems like they stopped selling it at retail in the Starbucks stores (at least around here), but they sell it at some grocery stores (Wegman's had a huge selection of Tazo stuff last time I was there).

I just buy the mixes and add hot water. My favorite is Oh My Chai from Tastefully Simple. Probably not as good as some of the other recipes, but it is quick!

I have several different type of chai tea bags. I've never made it myself as I love Starbucks concentrate and some of the bagged tea. I've stopped drinking anything but chai. It's so comforting!

I really like the Chai concentrates. You just mix about half concentrate and half milk. It's WAY better then the powder. Probably not as good as completely home made, but I'm lazy.

Where do you find the Big Train chai mix at? This is the kind my local coffee shop makes and I really like it but I have never seen it in stores. Tthanks for any help you can give! I am intrigued with the cocomotion. I'm going to have to look for it. My whole family likes chai and it gets expensive to get it at the coffee shop.

Stash makes wonderful Chai tea bags...regular, double spice, decaf and green tea Chai. I just brew them, add skim milk or half & half and sweeten with honey. Tastes about the same as Starbucks.

Oh yeah! I sell Tastefully Simple and it is a good thing I get a discount 'cause that stuff is addictive!!

Tazo concentrate. I don't want it very often, but for the price of one jumbo cup at a coffee shop, I can buy a package. My grocery store has it in the health/organic section, I get the sugar free one. Comes in a resealable quart box like soy milk, it's about $4 a box. :scared1: Costco has a 3 pack of the regular for a better price.

Big Train is used by a lot of coffee shops around here, and it's hard to find retail. I get mine at the Orange County Marketplace, of all places. You can buy it in bulk bags. I love their vanilla chai too! If you'd like me to pick some up for you, let me know! I try and shop there at least once a month. :)

And you NEED the Cocomotion! Way less expensive then an espresso machine, and I think it does an awesome job of whipping and frothing the chai.

I have bought some at Sam's Club--Mystic I think. It is a powder/add water type deal. It tastes exactly like the Starbucks stuff and costs about $5 for a 2 lb can.

Now I feel I do NEED the cocomotion. I have a gift card for Walmart from Christmas...this just may the thing to use it on. Thanks for offering to get me the Big Train...I will look around here and see if I can get it locally. The lady at the coffee shop likes DH so maybe she will tell him where we can get it or even sell him some.
