Ceramic Tile or Pergo in my New Kitchen....Can't decide!

DB and SIL remodeled their kitchen and asked me my opinion since I have hard wood floors in my kitchen. I suggested that if it were attractively do-able, I would have a combination of both. Tile in the work area near the sink, dishwasher, etc and wood in the other areas. The way their kitchen was laid out they were able to. It looks wonderful and it is very practical.

Ceramic tile without a doubt.

I work at a small school that spent thousands installing a Pergo floor. It looked nice. One weekend before school let out a pipe burst in the kitchen area. The majority of the floor had to be torn out and replaced.

I'd get the Pergo. Ceramic tile is harder on your back for standing for long periods(so my interior designer friiend told me) And if you drop a plate on cceramic...you've got no chance! On Pergo you just might save the plate. The tiles can crack also, if you drop a pot or one falls from the rack. It isn't easy to replace cracked ceramic tile without cracking a whole lot more tiles. If you go with the tile make sure you don't get a glossy tile or smooth surface tile as it is very slippery when wet. You can also get Pergo or other brand laminates in pattens other than wood, if you really love the look of tile or stone. Consumer Reports did a study in this month's ( I think) issue about what held up the best....real wod, laminates, engineered wood. Surprisingly for heavy traffic areas the laminate won. I have not read the article but they did a story about it on the consumer segment of our local news.

Ditto for the Pergo for the back. Ceramic tile sucks! I hate mine. I hurt so much after doing alot of standing and cooking in my kitchen. When and if I ever redo my kitchen, the tile is GONE!! :)

We have ceramic tile and I love it! I have actually dropped many glass things on it, and not had them shatter. In fact a beer bottle fell today w/o any issues at all. We also have a darker looking grout that has been a breeze to keep clean... well I don't do anything special and the color hasn't changed since we moved in ::yes::

I wouldn't ever get pergo in my kitchen. It isn't solid wood... and it only has a thin layer of "wood print" on the top. So if it gets scratched or dinged up, you're stuck with it. You can't sand it out or do much of anything to make it look better.

I personally am not fond of pergo at all. It does look nice, but I hate the way it feels and sounds when you walk on it.

I have hardwood in New Orleans, tile in Arkansas and had Pergo in my CA home before I sold it. The only one that I had a choice in was the Pergo.

It's a personal decision but here are my pros and cons:

Pergo - sound never bothered me. I loved the fact that my dog's nails didn't scratch it and "accidents" were easy to clean up. Negative - if you have a water leak you're done for. Pretty easy for that to happen in a kitchen. ( I had that leak). And Pergo changed the height of the floor panels so all of it had to be replaced. The people that bought my home ripped out $10,000 worth of Pergo and replaced it with carpet and tile.

Hardwood - same leak problems plus scratches pretty easily. I have a small lump from a leak (Katrina). There are scratches from the kitchen chairs being moved. Looks great though.

Tile - Hold up great especially if you get a dark grout. Mine is slippery as can be when wet which bothers me a lot with an 85 year old father. I don't mop until he has gone to bed. You will never go barefoot again in the kitchen or your back and feet (heel pain) will suffer. If you wear shoes (like Crocs) in the kitchen there is no real problem with the hardness. Tile is very, very difficult to remove unlike the others if you change your mind.

I honestly don't know what I would do if I were making the choice today. My sister just remodeled her kitchen and had a vinyl floor put in that looks as much like wood as Pergo does. No one can belief that it is not wood. It is soft to walk on and no seams (for her cat's accidents). It was expensive though.

OMG...too funny, as soon as I read this POST, an AD came on TV exactly for this exact same product. AND If I had not read this POST, I would have NEVER noticed the AD at all. Great idea. On TV the entire deal was $19.99. I went on their web site and the same package is $39.99!!! Anyway, is it sold in stores at all?? TIA!!!!

SORRY, OP, hope this is not OT :offtopic:

Yes, Walmart, Stop and Shop have the Orange Glo stuff. I really works. I use it about 3 times a year.

A friend has the Armstrong vinyl that looks like tile and it is amazing. It really does look real.

I don't like the look of Pergo wood butting up against real wood, it make the Pergo look REALLY fake (my in-laws have this and I think it looks horrible). One way to go would be to get the laminate tile. It looks like ceramic but is laminate. It is almost like the best of both worlds. We considered that for our old house for our foyer but ended up going with hardwood. The Wilsonart has the best looking laminate tile.

Hi everyone, sorry I didn't respond sooner. My 23 yr. old son had an emergency appendectomy on Tues. morning and I have been completely absorbed with this.
Thank you so much for all the responses and info. It looks like both have there pros and cons and this has made the decision hard. I'm 99% sure we are going with the ceramic tile although I did like Dawn's idea of using both.
It's less expensive for us too.
Thanks again.

Debbie

I would go with ceramic but if you really want wood I would put in real hardwood floors...I hate the look of that fake stuff.

We put tile in our laundry room and pergo in the kitchen and I wish we'd used the tile in the kitchen too. Our dishwasher backed up and warped the floor. My grout is darker than my tile and always looks good.

I would not put Pergo in any "wet" areas (kitchen, bathroom, laundry room), because if they get wet often I have heard the boards tend to buckle. My mom has Pergo throughout her house, personally I do not care for it, I don't like the hollow sound either. As far as what is good on the back, I have tile, mom has Pergo and if I stand on her floors for extended periods I get a stiff back, so I think it is what you get used to. She has Pergo in her master bath and she complains about the water marks that get left behind on it. If you choose tile, just be careful if you spill something because it is very slippery until it is cleaned or dried up!

I had an emergency appendectomy at WDW 4 years ago, and I was about 30 years older than your son. I was in EPCOT 48 hours later. Hope he is doing well.
