I am throwing a party for a family member --- was thinking of giving away the centerpieces after the party - but do not want to pick and chose and insult someone by not picking them --- thought of the penny under the plate idea - but then I'd be selecting that person again by putting the penny.

I thought of attaching a raffle ticket to an index card with a poem or something --- then I'll call out the 6-8 names and they can take the centerpiece home without insulting someone who didn't win. Makes sense? :) I can have them put the raffle ticket in a decorated jar and pick before the party is over.

What I need help with is --- what can I write on the index card?
Has anyone done this before?? :)

Thanks!!!

I've been to parties where they put the penny under the chair. Usually only tables are assigned not the actual chair, so it is random.

I also went to one where the DJ played a game of "hot Potato" with a napkin and the winner got the centerpiece.

Whoever has a birthday closest to the date of the party wins.

We usually either do closest birthday (or wedding anniversary) or put the penny taped to the bottom of the chair, people choose which seat to sit in (even at a wedding, usually only tables are assigned, not specific seats, so it's random)

Cannot understand how you would be selecting someone with the penny under the chair or other arbitrary method? I can't foresee something like this being such a big deal and can imagine it playing out where the recipient doesn't care for the centerpiece and offers it to someone else anyway.

We put a raffle ticket (the kind with two halves) by each place setting. Each person drops half of ticket in a basket, jar, whatever you choose to use. Winners are pulled from the container.

Almost all the centerpiece giveaways I've been at were whoever's birthday is closest to the date of the event gets it.

One time it was the oldest person at the table. That really only works well if you don't have people who are concerned about their age.

And another time, we had a ticket drawing. When someone's ticket number was announced, they could take any of the centerpieces, from whatever table they wanted. They only drew as many tickets as they had centerpieces. That one didn't work so well, as one person (a really lucky one) had 3 of her numbers pulled. I guess you could say, only one win per person.

From what I understand someone outs a penny under the plate and they win a centerpiece. One per table.... How does that cause a problem? And if they don't want it yes they will pass it to someone else, but that's not my problem lol ;-)

Do people want centerpieces that bad?

I saw wedding photos here on the DFTW section and the centerpiece was made up of a flourish of sticks of candy. Each guest got to take a stick of candy as their parting gift.

I thought that was a neat idea, and the married couple saved money on both the centerpiece and the parting gifts.

I have no clue if people need them that badly, I'm not one for taking them from any party I go too!
I just know that people do -- some take 2 i've seen! LOL
:rotfl:

Was just an idea to have a raffle ticket attached to a card w/ a poem and then I'd (or my Mom) would call out the number - avoids any issues ... it's a small party, 9 tables max...

Was just an idea --- If I have 9 tables, do 9 birthday's closest??

Thanks! for all the help! :)

I would just do the penny under the plate thing, if you want to assign tables fine, but don't assign actual plate settings. Just say "Denise you're at table 1" and let Denise find her own plate. :) Don't tell anyone about the giveaway and no one will look under their plate before they sit down. lol

:cool1::woohoo:

I don't think I have ever actually wanted to take home the centerpiece. At my brothers wedding I got stuck taking home the centerpiece, which was a fish in a glass bowl with a plant in it. Not only was it a royal PITA to drive home with it in the car but then I had to take care of a fish:rolleyes2 Please don't give away live fish

heheehe@fish! :)

People DO take them home --- I don't get it either -- I think I've taken home ONE in my lifetime - for my daughters benefit.. was a huge balloon bouquet.
