Yesterday we got what we thought was our census form in the mail. Nope, it was just a letter telling that we would be receiving our census forms soon. Really! I can only imagine how much it cost to tell us something we already knew...

Yeah, between that mailing and all of the commercials it is such a waste of money. I know what a census is and getting the news out that it is coming through the standard news channels would have been sufficient.

We got the same letter yesterday, and my DH had the same reaction you did. Only he called me at work to vent - lol. (he uses me to vent instead of the DIS. Usually I don't mind, but maybe I should get him an account here... :scratchin)

You would seriously have to be living under a ROCK not to know the census was coming and how important it is. There are advertisements EVERYWHERE. DD has even brought home notes from school about it.

DH was all, "How much money did they spend to print this and mail it out? No wonder the census costs so much!"

I guess we're lucky they didn't send it certified mail! :lmao:

I know! We got ours the other day, and I said the same thing. That was almost as bad and wasteful as when those letters went out to everyone a couple of years ago telling us to expect those $600/$1200 tax rebate (refund? whatever it was) checks in the mail from the government. I can see the need to make sure as many people complete the census forms as possible, but if people aren't going to do it, I doubt this letter makes them change their minds.

My 8 year old had to write a letter to me that the census is coming and to tell me to please fill it out that he wants to be counted. Also got the letter in the mail. Total overkill.

It was basically a government subsidy of the USPS without having to actually call it one.

How many people do you think will say fill out the census only because they got this letter?!;)

When the actual census arrives in the mail they would realize it was census time even if they didn't know it was coming.

I wonder is anyone will simply toss the real census assuming it's more junk mail.

Our tax dollars hard at waste, I mean, work... yeah, work... that's it...

I spent all day yesterday stuffing bags to hang on doors to let people know about the census. The person I was doing with this figure by the time they are delivered it will work out to just under $1 per door ( labor, and materials).
I do agree everyone shoudl complete the census but but all the expense leading up to it is overkill.

Obviously, this marketing campaign is being undertaken because loads of people neglect to respond to the census. I wish this marketing expense wasn't necessary, but it is.

Yup...ridiculous.

Even my almost 3 yr old knows about the census. They have been airing Dora the Explorer census commercials on Nickelodeon :confused3

I thought it was actually the census form as well & agree that it was a waste or paper, envelope & mailing costs! Leave it to the government....yada yada yada!

That's exactly what I thought when I got my letter ... good grief.

.

I got that letter too and thought the same thing
