Census taker tried to open my front door!

When someone comes to your door you should somehow make it known that someone is home. You don't have to open the door, just make some kind of noise. You could say "we're not interested" through the closed door, turn on the tv or even play a recording of a large dog barking ;). This is to scare off people that are looking for empty homes to burglarize. If they think the house is empty because you were quiet, their next step might be to try to break in.

This is great advice! You should never make your house seem empty.

Yikes! That's crazy!!

And for the record - being alone up here at the lake, I don't answer the door until I know who it is standing on the other side of it either.. It's a common sense safety precaution..

Yikes! Scary!!

I recently came home to find what appeared to be a census tag on my doorknob. Written along the sides and bottom of the tag was a note stating a census worker was trying to get information about one of my neighbors! They left a name and phone number, and asked ME to call them so that they could ask me questions about this particular neighbor. Wha?!? Nooo I don't think so.

I wouldn't open the door either, if I didn't know who it was knocking.

As a census worker myself, we never enter anyone's home, and we always have our ID available. I had a lot of people say they had mailed theirs in, but it was after April 1st, which did not make to cut off to get off the books for a visit. It is mandated by law to participate in the census, but we never threatened anyone. Most people I encountered were very nice. They knew I was just getting my job done.

BTW, a pp was right we are getting ready for our second campaign to catch those vacant and or refused, so its not over yet, please be nice and if you have any concerns, call the census office. I would not have any problems with someone doing that!
