Hello all,
Many years ago I met a gentleman that was involved in television animation and he passed along a manila envelope filled with (what he told me were) some production pieces from The Little Mermaid television show. What I know about the show is limited to what I read on some of these pieces and what I read on it on the IMDB (Internet Movie Database).
I will detail some of the pieces but you can visit a PicasaWeb album I created to get a visual on some of them which will do much more justice. I am into comic books and comic book art so I am certain I will use the incorrect nomenclature for some of these pieces.
Apparently I'm not allowed to post a link... bummer. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you it in a private message.
Or you can copy and past picasaweb.google.com/fuerstma/2009_07_14 into your browser....
I will try to discuss the pieces in roughly the same order as they appear in the web album there...
(1) "Production Sheet" - This sheet is from JetLag Productions, is dated from January 1993 and seems to entail cuts, edits and the layout of Scene 203. It may be from episode 005, but I am not certain. There are many notes on the page, in red and black pencil with multiple highlights, most of which make no sense to me. This paper is quite large, 11" x 17" when unfolded.
(2) A Cel along with original sketch - This is what I would call a cel, though it only has a foreground character. The character is a blonde headed girl wearing a green flower necklace and a white pearl headband. The Cel is roughly 9" x 11". It is marked "LM 89 SC 89". On the background of the cel you can see where the hand painting has occurred. I didn't take a photo of this, but I should have. In addition to the cel, I have the matching sketch that the cel was created from. It is hand drawn and has some notes such as "Hair" and "Leena". I originally thought Leena was a character name but searching Google yielded no results. Most of the sketch is in traditional pencil/graphite but the lips are drawn in blue and there is some red coloring near the flowers on the sketch. When laid over one another they match perfectly.
(3) Two sketches showing the back of the head of a female character on the left side of the page. These are sketched in multiple colors, green, red, blue and graphite pencils. Markings include "21, 22, 23, 24" on the sketch showing more of the character, and "24, 25, 26" on the second sketch. I assume these are frames that this sketch is used for? These are roughly 11" x 13".
(4) Two pieces with very rough/early sketches on them. They are frames inside what looks like a 16 X 9 ish photo box. They are marked "The Li'l Mermaid" and "Dec 28". These are very thin pieces of paper and have some staple marks in them. The letters "K.K. C+D" are along the bottom, which I presume is a production company of some sorts.
(5) These two pieces are similar to (4) in that they are also marked "K.K. C+D" and of similar size but they are obvious photocopies of the originals. In addition they seem to have directions for the camera like a storyboard would.
(6) This piece has a lot of action in it. It's roughly 11" x 10" and shows a mermaid being pulled down by a pair of hands on the left of the sketch. ON the right seems to show a dolphin being pulled under by a similar set of hands. Along the far right of the sketch are a set of numbers that again I hypothesize correspond with frames? Lots of action and one of the more interesting pieces. The sketches are in graphite, red and green pencils.
(7) This piece again is what I'd call a cel, though again it only has a foreground element. It has what I would call a "princess" in a white dress walking aside a "prince". Along the bottom of the cel is marked "LM 797 A7". In addition to this cel, is another piece that looks like a printed background of ocean waves and clouds. By itself, it doesn't look like much, but when you overlay the prince and princess cel on top of the background piece, they appear to be walking on the clouds, waving. I believe these two pieces are meant to be together.
(8) Lastly, I've got a set of 7 sketches of a Mermaid. The Mermaid is in various poses, looking shocked to the side, smiling, looking to the side, looking surprised, etc... Each of these are marked with a series of 3 or so numbers. They are all roughly 10" x 12". They are all done in graphite, green and blue pencils. One of the 7 pieces has some red pencil in the Mermaids fingers and a horizontal line across the upper chest for some reason.
So, that's all of it. My manila folder. I've moved this with me several times and am facing a move again in the near future and am considering passing these along to a Disney or The Little Mermaid collector. Are these worth anything? Does anyone have any details as to what exactly I am holding onto? Any information you have would be appreciated. Where exactly would one go to sell such things?
Thanks so much!
Matt
