Well..........the time has come. :sad2:

Since the MK opened in 71 I have been collecting cels. Original productions, serigraphs, sericels and limited editions. I remember when there was a store in Fantasyland and you could select them by filing through a box, like you would do cassettes or lp's, and picking one out. Wow...yea... olden times! ;)

I had all the original prod cels and some favorite LE's hung throughout the house. It was very cool and I have great memories of them.

Now.......I've retired, moved to my shore home, with more windows than wall space, and its, sadly, time to downsize my life.
:( :( :(

My orig cels were sold thru Sotheby's last summer. It went OK but I'm certainly having a hard time...downsizing Disney.

Any cel collectors out there?? Anyone going thru this process??
I still have the large remainder of my collection and working up to facing the reality of selling them too !!

Have a Disney Day !!

My sister recently went through the same thing...not with cels but with figurines. She had quite a collection of WDCC figures. She found it hard to part with them but since they retired, sold their house and are traveling......hard to take them with you.

Good luck.

I am sad for you that you are having to do this. I hope they are going to good homes. I started collecting Sleeping Beauty cels about 5 years ago when my wonderful husband actually listened when we were at WDW when I said how I would love to have one. He has bought 2 for me for Christmas and surprised me with them since then. I know 2 is not much of a collection, but it is a start. I am hoping to purchase/receive more as the years go by.

I don't know if this is the proper venue or not, but when you decide to start selling the rest of your collection I am sure there are those of us on this board who would love to have a shot at purchasing them.

Have fun in your retirement!

I'm sure what you are going through is no fun at all. I normally would say to look at the bright side, but the thought of having to sell or give away even a small part of my Cinderella Collection (cheap version of a cel, lots of the waterglobes, etc) would break my heart.
I guess the only bright side is that the people purchasing the pieces of your collection are also collectors - your legacy continues in that.
Very few people get to watch their legacy continue past themself - you've inspired others to collect or made the day of someone who already collects.

Go slow - it's a hard process.
I'm sure there are many collectors on this board who would love a piece of your legacy and would take care of that piece in the same manner you would.

Only been collecting for a short while, got a few. But much like yourself I would be devestated if something was to happen to them.
It was my birthday today and my wife got me the new cell "Checking in" that's another one to get framed and on the wall.

Holidays Include

2003 - Boardwalk
2002 - Lake Buena Vista
1998 - Grosvenor Resort
1991 - Quality Inn I -Drive
1989 - Low Q, I - Drive (Honeymoon)

I only have 5 cels at the moment, but ihave various other stuff, especially framed pin sets, WDCC, Haunted Mansion collectibles, etc. It would be difficult to part with my doll collection, so I feel your pain! Best of luck to you!

senecabeach- Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm sure there are many of us that will be in that same circumstance before too long.

How does one contact Sotheby's to arrange to have the art auctioned? Do they send out appraisers? Did you have to ship the pieces or did they pick them up?

thanks...

I have several, but have not been faced with selling them.

I did have a HUGE Barbie collection that I had to sell on short notice (pregnancy--the baby needed the barbie room  ) So I know what you are going through.

It's a difficult decision to have to make and I would suggest keeping the ones that mean the most to you. Even if you don't have a place to hang them now, you may find the space one day.

flyinglizard...

I contacted Sotheby's through their web site and the next day received a call from the animation director. I shipped the original cels to Ca.

I would NOT go through them again with my serigraphs, sericels, LE's...their cut is 25%. The oc's were worth it.

I am going to the Disneyana convention this July and also visit DL for the 1st time. :Pinkbounc

Hope to network with other cel collectors. I'll bring a cd and photos of the rest of the collection with me.

:wave2:

Have you ever considered donating them to a local hospital for their Children's Wing? That way you could get the charitable tax deduction and still visit them form time to time.

This is what I am considering. When I moved, the house I have now just doesn't have the wall space. I can't see selling them.... but right now, the only people enjoying them are possibly the spiders setting up home in those boxes.
