cell phones on airplanes

I know you can't use a cell phone on the plane when it is in the air, but can anyone tell me what airplane mode is on the cell phone. I saw it in my phone when I was playing with it, but I have no idea what it is for. I know I could read the book, but what fun is that? Thanks for any help.

Airplane mode is when the radio signal is turned off. No signal can be sent or received.

In Airplane mode, you can still use your games, pictures, movies, etc. and other non-phone related applications.

Thank you. I guess texting is considered a phone application. Too bad. I am just happy I am flying Jet Blue because I love the TV. It keeps me distracted since I am not a good airplane person.
