Cell phone while on the lazy river

Unfortunately, for some of us, it's about the only way that we can take vacation these days.

This is a truly sad commentary on the state of employment in our country. Employers are becoming abusive with technology. You can't honestly tell me that a business would completely collapse if one person takes a vacation. To me, that says that the management is ineffective. You don't allow one person to become so indespensible that they can't take a week or two off every year. Before laptops, blackberries and cell phones, employers had to learn to crosstrain employees and cover for vacations. These days, the employers feel that they own their people 24/7, 52 weeks a year. Most of those jobs are white collar, non-union so there is no way to protect the employee from this type of abuse. You don't like it, quit-is the sentiment many people get from their management.

Of course, there are some employees that thrive on being so important that they are never out of reach-but that's a whole 'nother issue. They create their own misery.

It's so sad to me when people are at Disney with their kids and they are so absorbed with work conversations that they are missing the sight of their child enjoying the park.

I just did this at a local water park. DH, DS, and I were there---our daughters were at camp for a week. I didn't want to be anywhere without my phone in case one of my girls called. Needless to say, I'd been in Lazy River for about five minutes when my phone rang. When I got to a spot where I could get out, I did. But for a little while, I floated along and talked to my daughter.

I'm one of the unfortunate saps who is a slave to his employer and must be able to be contacted 24 hrs a day. I take my cell phone to WDW, but I never answer it if it vibrates (never on ringer) and allow all calls to go to voicemail. They might try to call me on vacation, but they'll get a response when I ready to give one. Gotta stick it to the "man"!

I have grown to dislike cell phones and with each passing year my dislike seems to be turning into hate. It's one of the reasons that I don't go to the movie theater anymore. The direct connect feature on the Nextel phones may be a time saver to some but it was one of the worst inventions to ever come out. You can't seem to go anywhere without hearing that unmistakable beep/chirp followed by a loud voice booming from the speaker. Then of course the guy who was just beeped/chirped, has to respond just as loud and seems to be under the impression that everyone needs to hear that conversation. The subject usually involves the key catch phrases of What's up dog, or What's up do or doe? I think it's supposed to be dude but they say it like "do" or "doe" instead of "dude" I guess clear sounding english isn't required to speak on a phone nowdays.


I recently attended a high school graduation for a friend of the family and was amazed by how many grads had cell phones with them during the ceremony. After the caps were thrown in the air, it was like it was a mandatory rule for everyone to grad a cell and start talking, to anyone! I've only been out of high school for 21 years now and I don't remember missing anything or feeling left out because we didn't have cell phones. We didn't even know what they were and we lived in ignorant bliss. I only use my cell phone for my business and keep it on silent mode in my pocket. I don't have to use it that much and even less on vacation. It stays in the hotel room most of time, where it belongs.

Second of all, what did he do when he went under the waterfalls?

That's very cool and I do the same when on vaction. I like the calls to go to voicemail as well and then I can respond privately without bothering anyone else. The people around me at WDW didn't pay all that money for my personal life to interfere with theirs. How hard is it to respond to a call when the ride or attraction is finally over? There is all kinds of remote areas in WDW to privately take or respond to a call without annoying anyone else. I love that comment about sticking it to the man.

I'll start off by saying - I HATE CELL PHONES - now you know where I am coming from.

People don't know how to be alone anymore. They don't understand how to enjoy the moment they are in. They also don't understand how this inability effects people around them.

I absolutely agree with you on this one. My 2 girlfriends and I went to Disney last 4th of July as a birthday gift for one of them. She spent the entire 4 days on the phone to friends back in NY (one day she was on the cell phone while under the bed covers at 5:00 am). I was livid First I thought it was incredibly rude to me and my other girl friend. Second I had to listen to this "chatter" through out my entire vacation. After 2 full days of this I finally threaten to throw the #@$ thing off of splash mt, if she didn't turn it off.

I wonder if the people who are upset about the government taping their phone conversations are the same ones walking about yelling their personal business into a cell phone? You can't go to a store, on a train or even stand in a Disney line without hearing someone's life story being broadcast through a cell phone conversation. I've heard things that amaze me about relationships, health issues and financial problems. I've been so tempted to add comments to some of those conversations after the person hangs up just to remind them that everyone is hearing their personal information. It all seems odd with a society so concerned about identity theft and privacy.

ITA! It's like being stopped at a red light and the person in front is talking on their phone when the light turns green and they keep sitting there talking - grrrr.

You know, my sister has done that....

Anyway, DH and I always have our cell phones nearby. He can't vacation without an accessible phone - they've never done it yet but the military requires him to be recalled within 24 hours of an alert. (They called him this morning as he was at the airport, heading on a TDY.) And I usually have mine when DH is deployed because we only get so many phone calls a week and I don't like to miss one!

I also agree -- maybe because of the circumstances in my earlier post. I just don't get general cell-phone animosity. If someone is speaking quietly so as to not disturb those around them and paying attention to their surroundings so as not to get in anyone else's way, what's the big deal?

Of course, I suppose someone who meets both my prerequisites is a pretty rare commodity.

Now I was not on the lazy river but I'm NEVER without one of my cells .

My work Blackberry is on 24/7 unless I'm on Vacation (i'm on a callout list ).

Then my personel Cell has everything I need ,Time ,Contacts , Calender,Music Mp3,Camera and even my Ckeck book & DVC points Accounts on it.I don't wear a watch anymore because I have an Updated time everytime it connects.

I used it to check-in to SWA while walking through BTMRR at 8:00pm with 3 different confirm #'s

Also as we have Nextels and Dd & I awake and get to the parks at opening the rest of the group can meet up later and not worry about having a meeting place and waste time.

Now with that being said on 3 different occasions I left my cell heading to the parks with DD .She kept asking what time and I would laugh and say Don't know I have no cell and don't care find a fastpass and look at the return clock.

Oh and I might be in line playing a game not talking on it.

That's kind of what I was thinking, but not rubbing it in. Hopefully, he's friends with some real Disney fan whom he chose to call from Typhoon Lagoon-"Guess where I am right now!" DS did that-he called me from Fantasyland when he was on his high school band trip. I could hear the Fantasyland sounds in the backround, he described the bench he was sitting on, exactly what was going on around him, it was so cool! Except that when he called, I screamed so loud I probably damaged his ear! To me, that would be the only acceptable excuse for him being on his cell phone-to make some Disney fan happy.

I don't understand cell phones either. I love the Corona commercial where the lady looks for a spot on the beach with "no signal" and that's where they set up their chairs!

That being said, we'll take them to WDW in March; we'll be a party of 12 and will need to use them I'm sure.

What I don't understand is when I'm driving to work at 7 AM and seeing the people around me at stoplights, on the road, etc....on their phone. I mean, WHO are you talking to at 7 AM???????

So many times I've overheard adults traveling with their spouses and kids trying to deal with problems back at work. How sad that a vacation can't be a vacation. DH and I were in line at Soarin' and a man behind us got a cell phone call. He said "Well, I'm here with my family at Disney World". Apparently this wasn't a good enough answer for the caller, and this man spent several minutes trying to explain the details of some corporate purchase. When it was time to board Soarin' he finally said "I'm losing the signal, I'll call back later." Fun vacation, huh?

That would be my husband. He is on the phone in the parks and works on his PC when he goes back to the resort. He can never seem to put his work aside long enough for our vacation. He's always cleaning up "one or two" things in the first part of the vacation and arranging stuff for the following week at the end of our vacation. Some people are driven by their work and my DH is one of them. Since there is not a darn thing I can do about it I try not to let it bother me. Much.
