Cell phone vent!

I use my phone at the park...

If it was not for my smart phone I would not be a able to home office.... sometimes when I "work from home" I will sneak away with DD or DH for a few hours to DLand since we live so close, but I still need to stay connected. I check email while in line , I make calls at lunch, never on a ride.... How could I explain "a Pirates Life For Me" in the back ground? Lol

I use my phone as a camera, and forward to family via text, email or social media in real time.

I use my phone for Mouse Wait, before a smart phone I would have to guess

I use my phone for parade times , I guess I can get this info on paper, but I prefer to use my phone and be green.

My daughter uses my phones for games while in longer lines, before smart phones she would have just annoyed everyone around us.

:-)

It's not people using them in general. I don't think anyone here thinks it's a problem to take phone calls, use apps (disney app for example) even check quick emails or what not.

Last time I was there I saw families of "zombies". Just walking through the parks barely looking up to see what they were passing. Whole families not say 2 words to each other at dinners because they are all on their phones- thumbs moving like mad.

Cells phones aren't evil... but like anything... they can be addicting.

Well put.

I use my phone in lines to keep entertained. Sometimes I'll let the girls entertain themselves with the phone. Standing in lines for hours a day during a trip can be excruciating without some entertainment. It's probably the reason my dad couldn't stand a whole day of Disneyland 30 years ago, we probably drove him nuts!

I'm the guy on both sides of the fence.

I don't get why people do it, I personally don't. Hell, I still own one of the old flip phones and dont get all this online stuff like others do. But I don't get why someone would go to Disneyland and spend all day walking around with their phone glued to their face.

On the other hand....what the heck business is it of mine what other people do on their vacation. It's their money, it's their time, let them do what they want with it. It should not matter to me or anyone else what they do on their vacation. Especially since they are not breaking any laws.

As far as it impacting me, sure, it may from time to time when someone accidentally bumps me, but come on people, were in Disneyland here, and you can get bumped by people not on a phone too. If you go to Disneyland expecting to not be around people, and expecting to not get bumped into, then people you just went to the wrong place.

I agree with the OP comments 100%. Now to each their own, but really???

So many people these days live their lives through their electronics instead of interacting with real people. It isolates people and humanity. This is a real problem in modern society and the OP is pointing out examples where you see it happen.

For people who do business at the park - I sincerely hope for you that you delegated as much responsibility as possible while you were on vacation. I have know a few senior executives who are great at this and therefore better at their jobs because they had some down time. I also saw one the other day taking a piss and a phone call at the same time - that is horrid, if you can't take a break to pee than you need to re-evaluate how you do your work!

In business, crap happens and yes people sometimes need to step away and deal with things...I get it when this happens and it's ok if it isn't all the time.

However, you see many people live their whole vacation through their phone tablets and cameras. They miss actually experiencing things! This lack of human experience is disturbing.

There is a balance out there...

I encourage you to try completely disconnecting for a day...just try it once, you may be surprised at what happens. I was amazed myself.

Saw a little girl about 4 yo with her parents. She was dressed in a Cinderalla dress and was obviously excited. They were in front of the castle and she was twirling around, saying "look daddy, look!".
Daddy couldn't look up from his phone, he just kept saying mhmm to her.
He will probably wonder why she seems disconnected from him as she she grows up....if that's his usual mode of interaction.

I felt very sad for her...all she wanted was her daddy to tell her how beautiful she looked in her gown in front of the castle.

We leave our phones in hotel safe. Just can't be bothered to carry them around while we're having fun. But I usually don' care what others do as long as it doesn't impact others around. But I did feel bad for that little girl.

Honestly, it's my belief that what people do or spend their time at the park is there own business. For all I know the guy on a cell phone while in the queue for Jungle Cruise is doing business remotely so he can spend some extra time with his family, or the girl is checking in with her parents before meeting for dinner.

People say we are caught up way too much in technology. I say people are too caught up with what other people are doing with their lives. If people were not so caught up with what Joe Blow who doesn't even live in the same country as them is doing, they might actually be a bit happier in their lives.

I interviewed for my current job at WDW last January. I took several quite lengthy phone calls because if I didn't, the job would have been gone. The Animation Building at HS will have fond memories for me now. Lol. DDs played with DH while I wandered through quiet areas and interviewed.

I also use my phone to take pics when I don't feel like pulling out the camera. I enjoy posting to Instagram and FB and sharing our vacation. I turn my Instagram photos into a photo book, so I like having them.

I also have Disney apps on my phone with wait times, maps and menus, and I assume that's what a lot of people are doing while they are there, too. I keep my notes on our reservations and touring plans in my iPhone as well. So, yes, I'm often looking at my phone on vacation. It's a tool to help me enjoy it better.

Besides, what other people do shouldn't bother you unless they are personally interfering with your vacation (which being on their phone, as long as they aren't loud, doesn't do). If people want to be on their phone for whatever reason that you don't know, that's ok. We all are entitled to enjoy our vacations in our own way.

I did for a week on a DCL last year, we were on an international cruise and turned off the roaming so I would not be tempted to "check in" at an outrageous cost. LOL

I was surprised, the world was still there when we returned to Los Angeles.

We had a wonderful trip :-)

but why is that your problem? maybe they are actually texting each other, playing games with each other...

Never said it was my problem, or any problem at all. It was an observation and my opinion that it was a sad sight.

Take tdhickey's advice

DBF and I were waiting in the SR line on RSR and the two teen girls in the family of four I was assigned to ride with were on their phones while the car pulled up. They got in the car leaving a seat between them, not noticing that I would be joining them. The CM had to yell at them twice to move over before they realized the CM was talking to them. We finished boarding the car and the girls proceeded to text all the way up until Sheriff says to slow down. And they intermittently texted throughout the indoor portion of the ride.

Honestly, I don't care if you're using your phone in the queue, but if you're disrupting my ride then that's a different story. Dark rides where I have to ride with others like Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Soarin' are the worst places for someone to text or play games on his or her phone.

Keep in mind that not all of us are at Disney on vacation. Like I mentioned previously we are locals so we are at the park all the time. If we were doing a true vacation, I probably would put my shop on vacation mode and limit the business I would need to handle. I try not to do much while im there cause I truely love Disney, but if something comes up im not going to feel guilty responding to a quick email.

Also like a lot of other posts I use mousewait, check time, pictures, to text my husband or any one we are trying to meet up with, etc. It is always going to be one of those topics that no one is going to fully agree on. Regardless hopefully one thing we all agree on is that Disney is awesome no matter how we all choose to experience it:)

We sure have a lot of threads recently about how what other people do messes up someone else's time at DLR. Personally, as long as you aren't cursing loudly, talking about inappropriate things for kids to hear, or directly getting in the way of my fun, then I don't care what you do. Wear what you want (within reason, but not my expectations of reasonable, I let Disney make that call 'cause its nit my place to judge!), use your phone or iPad as much as you want in line, especially if you are surfing the web or texting (it does irritate me when people talk on the phone in public places like that: find a bench and sit down and take your call, don't stand there yelling because you can't hear when you are somewhere with no expectation of quiet), eat and drink what you want and just do what you want. I'd never let someone else's choices affect me enough to start a thread about their behavior. And if it ever did, I would say something. Girls texting on dark rides? Say something! I would tell them to stop, without question. Clearly nobody is teaching them etiquette, help their families out by teaching them something. We rode the Little Mermaid ride with an older woman taking flash photos. I told her it was ruining our ride and not only did she stop, she apologized profusely for not knowing/realizing how irritating it was. If I hadn't spoken up she might still be engaging in that behavior (you all can thank me later) simply because she didn't know.

Anyhow, my point was, stop worrying about everyone else and just try to have a good time!

I understand why everyone wants this to stop on the rides. I have seen a lot of people say that everyone should say something to them to make them stop. I'm not sure in this day and age that I believe that is the smart thing to do. I would not go up to anyone and say anything as you never know how that person is going to react to the situation and you could end up getting in deeper than you care or want to. The person could react with violence and end up hurting someone. You never know what someone has on them, and even though everyone is checked upon entering the parks all kinds of stuff makes it through as they don't really check that hard. I would recommend taking your concerns to a CM and letting them handle (or not handle) the situation how they see fit. To go up and confront someone just doesn't make sense these days.

I'm just sayin.....

Um, the lady on Little Mermaid was not going to attack me. Teenage girls might talk smack to you, but I don't see danger. Truth is, I think this is what's wrong with society today. Nobody speaks to each other anymore. A man actually hit my mother with his cart at the grocery store yesterday because he could nit use his words like a big boy and say, "excuse me," instead he got impatient and just went. What is wrong with people? If someone is going to flip out if asked to be polite, they shouldn't be out in public anyway. Perhaps they need to be removed.

I wasn't just speaking to your comment alone, but ok, lets use yours.....the lady on Little Mermaid wasn't going to attack you. And you knew that how? She could have been a complete psycho for all you know.

Maybe the lady on the Little Mermaid was having a bad day and you could have been the straw that broke the camels back, or like I said maybe she is a total psycho, or maybe she was just a plain ole lady riding along on Little Mermaid, you just don't know.

You took a chance completely on her looks and this time nothing happened, maybe next time something will. I'm not disagreeing with you that society has changed and this may be part of the problem. But my point is exactly that, society has changed, and I'm not sure it has changed for the better, and I know that confronting rude people now a days is not what it use to be and can get you hurt if you confront the wrong person at the wrong time. Thats what the CM's are for thats what they get paid for, its not your or my place to say anything to the offender.

I get what you are saying, I even agree, to an extent. I do think people should try to handle things, minor things like picture taking, on their own when they can. That said, I think you do have to be careful. Anyone can be crazy, or just angry and mean in general. I know that. I don't just go around telling people what they should or shouldn't do. The pictures on dark rides is something some people just don't know about. Some know and just don't care, but often it is just a case of ignorance, and if we all just walk around mad instead of speaking up, they'll never know. That's all.
