Cell phone questions. Sprint

We are in Barcelona getting on magic tomorrow. I checked with sprint they told me that we can text internet unlimited free and phone calls are 20 cents a minute which to me sounds like it's too good to be true but 2 reps told me it was right. But they said while at sea make sure you have it on airplane mode and that you don't have these features while at sea only in ports Exactly what does the airport mode do. Just to be safe can I just turn my phone off. Also someone on another thread said make sure I have automatic apps off. What would these be. Thanks all

@Dznypal That's what we experienced in the Bahamas, not sure about Barcelona. Sprint has this info on their website and a list of where free texting and free 2G service is available. I think the auto apps reference is for the on board wifi. We wasted a lot of the free 50MB when apps in the background kept refreshing. You'd have to change your settings to push notifications i believe before you leave. Putting your phone in airplane mode while at sea is what most people do to avoid roaming charges from the satellite cell service (those are roaming charges you do not want! ). Then after your.phone is in airplane mode, turn on wifi to connect to ship's wifi for the navigator app (you should download that before you leave ). If you did want to try Sprint's free international roaming, you'd take it back off of airplane mode when in port to get on auto international roaming if you'd like. Good luck! There's someone on board to help you with the ship's wifi in case you need it, fyi.

If you have any internet service you can make phone calls thru Facebook messenger to anyone who is a Facebook friend. It's how I stay in touch with my kids while on the ship.
