"Celebrating" a deceased person's birthday?

Sometimes I get the flowers for the church service in memory of my father. I always remember him on his birthday and make a point of sharing a few stories with my kids. I want them to have "memories" of him because he was a special man.

I usually go to the cemetary on my grandmother's birthday to put flowers on her grave. It's what she would have liked, so I do it, even though it doesn't really do anything for me.

I like the ideas of going to a play, fixing a favorite meal or baking a cake. Kind of neat.

DS and I send balloons up to Heaven for my husband's birthday. And I think last year I got DS a cupcake, put a candle in it, and sang Happy Birthday. I don't do anything on my parents' birthdays. But they are on my mind through the week probably. Dad's birthday was July 5, and Mom's was July 9. We're in a different state than where everyone is buried. But I'm not so sure I'd want to be at the cemetary any way.
