Ceiling fans - yay or nay?

Ceiling fan styles make a big difference.

For me, I wouldn't put one in my kitchen. We had a ceiling fan in our family room (9 foot ceilings). Someone pointed out to me that the fan made the ceilings seem much shorter than 9 feet. I totally replaced the fan (for a more "ceiling hugger" style) and it makes a huge difference. I also got an updated color. Now if you look for it,you see an in style fan, but it is not the first thing you see when you walk into the room. Raise the fans if you can.

This is the situation in my kitchen. I need a "hugger" model because visitors who are taller than us do bump into it. I should put a small island or table under it to prevent that, but the space is on the smaller side. Does it make a difference that we don't have a range hood? Would that change your opinion of ceiling fans in the kitchen? I suppose we could switch out to a standard fixture and add a pedestal or floor fan when needed if we go that route.

We have one in our kitchen...I couldn't imagine not having one in there. We do have a range hood, but that's not the reason for the ceiling fan. We have no A/C. (well, we do have window units, but we only turn them on if the heat and humidity are unbearable). I don't run the ceiling fan on high. We use the lowest speed. We make sure that the blades are dusted frequently. We've never had any problems at all having one in the kitchen. I say go for it!

I LOVE, LOVE ceiling fans! We have one in every bedroom and one in the family room in the house we're in right now. I'd love one in the kitchen, but it's a fairly small kitchen, so I don't think it would work.

We never had ceiling fans in any of our houses in New England. If we decide to keep our house in Maine, I would definitely add ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and one in the living room. I'd also put one in the screened porch.

I'm a huge fan of dining al fresco and here in Arizona I get to do that a lot! There are tons of restaurants that have outdoor eating areas, many with water misters and ceiling fans.

I much prefer fans to air conditioning.

Living in the south, I'm going to say yes to a ceiling fan anywhere you can put one. We use ours constantly during the warmer months.

I love ceiling fans, never thought about them being out of style. That being said, I hate ceiling fans in the kitchen. I guess as long as you don't run it while food is out you are ok. Have you ever seen what ceiling fans to do food. YUCK.

It must be a cultural thing, most southerners I know won't run on in the kitchen, but most people form the north do. lol

I would think they are great while cooking, it would help to cool things off, but the can turn fresh bread into a brick in a matter of a few minutes.

I have one in my kitchen and love it. I work all day, every day, at the kitchen table and it's nice to have air circulating around me. It helped quite a bit during the summer, since there's no vent right near me; otherwise, it'd get pretty hot in that corner.

I don't think it's a ceiling fan alone that makes a room dated. You have to look at the bigger picture. In this case, if it's 30 yrs old the only light besides it is a fluorescent light, then that might look a bit outdated even if you get a new fan. But there could easily be some small changes you can make in the room that would make it seem more updated (if you want) - regardless of what you decide to do about the fan vs ceiling light (although my vote would be for a nice modern light unless you need it for cooling).

Well that's good to know - we just spent hundreds of dollars putting ceiling fans in every room of our new house!

Oh, I don't agree with it. I think it's silly. I personally love my ceiling fans. They make it cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter. I love them!

I know - I think it's so silly. They have some really beautiful ceiling fans, now a days.

Since that HGTV show where the families redecorate rooms for each other was telling everyone they were out of style.

It's a lot of those shows. They always wanna rip them out. I never get it.

I agree. It's amazing how HGTV and the like have kind of swayed a lot of the design trends over the past few years. Things like stainless steel appliances, wallpaper, ceiling fans, and even color choices. I admit, I love watching, but sometimes I think you have to know your own self and own home and go with what works for YOU.

I love my ceiling fans. I find it amazing how a group of decoraters can dictate what is "in style" for everyone else. According to the decorating shows, ceiling fans are out of style as are any appliances other than stainless steel. Too bad, I'm keeping my ceiling fans and I hate the look of stainless steel. It's a good thing I have no intentions of selling my house for a long time. By the time I am ready to move, ceiling fans and non stainless appliances will probably be the new "in".

If I understand the OP, she has only the ceiling fan and fluorescent lighting over her sink as light sources in her kitchen. Since she is already considering replacement of the ceiling fan, perhaps it is time to look at installation of more light fixtures in the kitchen? I just did this in my own kitchen, and I find it makes a huge difference.

I love ceiling fans - particularly the ones that have 4 lights in them.. They make the rooms nice and bright - as well as cutting down on cooling and heating costs..

I love ceiling fans! If they're out of style that's just too bad but then I'm not style conscious anyway. It surprises me though because it seems like everyone has ceiling fans.

Yes. The whole kitchen needs an overhaul, but that is years away from being done. I would like to add a couple of pendants.
