Ceiling fan advice

We have a 17 year old ceiling fan in the master bedroom. It has remote control variable speeds and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Also don't like the 3 lights on it so we are starting to shop for a new one. We also have a vaulted 16 foot high ceiling in our bedroom. Can anyone recommend a fan preferably with lighting? Where did you purchase yours? What is a ballpark price? And also because of the height, I bet we're going to have to call an electrician to take down the old one and put up the new one. Thanks for any advice.

We ordered off the internet. There are hundreds of them in all price ranges to fit anyones budget and tastes. We also have 2 story ceilings so had to hire an electrician. I would also advise you to use the new generation lightbulbs that will last several years.

Home Depot and lowes have a ton of options and all are pretty decent. You could probably buy a ladder and fan and install it yourself for cheaper than an electrician would charge. It is very easy just make sure the power is off . You could YouTube instructions but is basically three wires. Black to black, white to white and a ground if there is one. Most new fans even have quick connect so no electrical tape required. It is very easy and you get yourself a new ladder as well.

We bought our ceiling fans from Menards during their 33% off lighting sales. Lowes has some nice Ceiling fans with lights but Menards has more selection and better sales.

I think the fans in these two stores are not very nice. You can do better at less cost buying online. And I wouldn't even consider getting on a 16 foot tall ladder for this job; be safe and pay a professional for installation.

Price it out. Decide what you want:remote, light switch, blade style. Light bulbs can be switch out as can the shades. There can be a huge differance between online and local stores, but you have to factor shipping and potentially returning IF something is broken. Also call an elcectrician see what it would cost to install one. With the ceilings you have you might want to invest anyway in the ladder, so you might want to go ahead and install it. Gonna have to change light bulbs sometime Again price it out.

you'll need a 16 foot step ladder, not an extension ladder. They are expensive and good luck getting a 16 foot ladder home from the store. Hire an electrician and get him to put in long life bulbs.

I used a fan store (Dan's Fan City) and was able to select the motor/blade/lighting combinations I wanted. This was for eight fans when I got a new house eight years ago. The store recommended a contractor who actually picked them all up, came to my house with them, and did the installation all for $400. During construction I had the house prewired for the fans.

You don't need an electrician to just do the replacement, but you do need a person who knows what he is doing and has the proper tools and equipment.

I work for a lighting wholesaler and we have our own line of fans. My best advice is not to go the cheap route. If you want a fan that won't be noisy or wobble when hung from a long downrod, you'll want to avoid the low end and even the contractor grade fans.

Electrical items that work sometimes and sometimes not can indicate a potentially dangerous condition so I would be getting that checked out right away. DH does the work, so he would have fixed it the first time it happened. We use Casablanca fans.

Casablanca makes good fans, but they make crummy ones too. Again, avoid the low and contractor grade stuff and you'll be fine

Thanks for all the advice. Off to look on line and visit a few lighting stores. Love the new long lasting bulb idea- definitely will do that.
