Have any of you campers been to Cedar Point, Ohio? We can't decide between that or Myrtle Beach, SC. Any suggestions? Thanks!
(from snow blizzard New England)

I've been to the amuzement park. It's awesome. In my opinion, some of the best coasters in the country are at Cedar point. However, I have never camped there since we have family close by.

We camped there last year outside of the park. At Camp Sandusky. It was a nice quiet campground about 10 minutes from the park. The onsite campground looked really nice and shady and they have early entrance hours if you stay on-site!!

We absolutely love Cedar Point, and go every year. I don't think you can beat their thrill rides, or, if you can, I'd just as soon not  One of the things that really makes it work for us is that there are a couple of kid areas and the not-thrill-ride stuff is spread out pretty well. So its like...
grown up stuff, kiddy land, grown up stuff, play ground, grownup stuff, camp snoopy, grown up stuff, pioneer town.
And then there's just seeing the lake and the sail boats and stuff like that. Very pleasant.
We go up to that area for a week or so every summer, PM me if you are going for awhile and wonder what else to do.

Cedar Point is awesome! I think my kids would rather go there then WDW, sad to say.

I love CP and have gone every year for the past five years. I agree with what others have said, its a good mixture of thrill rides, family rides, and classic rides (CP has 3 classic carousels). My personal favorite rides are the Denzel Kiddie Kingdom Carousel, The Racer, The Sky Ride, and Gemini. It is a huge resort area, and actually its not all about the park. They have a water park there, as well as a beautiful sand beach that never gets used anymore, but does have a place you can go parasailing. There is also a marina area, which has a few restaurants.

I have never myself camped at a park (not a bad idea though) but I know CP has two onsite camping facilities, Lighthouse Point, and Campers Village. You can check the rates online at www.cedarpoint.com. Both are walkable to the challenge park gate of Cedar Point (campers village is a little closer), and if you are looking at cost, that's major as you are saving on parking, which I think is now $9.00 or so.

Also if you do stay onsite the park offers early mornings, where CP opens select attractions 30 minutes early for onsite guests, usually the list consists of Raptor, Millinnium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, etc. This is a life saver especially for MF and Top Thrill, which can easily have 2 hour plus lines in the afternoons on busy weekends.

As far as overall cost, if you can get a season pass from another Cedar Fair park you can also use it at Cedar Point to get in free. Some are better deals then others, you can look up the entire chain at www.CedarFair.com

We live in MI and camp often at Bayshore Campground. It's 3-5 minutes from Cedar Point. They have a shuttle from the camp ground to CP. I think round trip it costs $4.

While we were there last year we took the ferry out to Put-In-Bay Island and rented a Golf Cart for the day. It was a blast!!

I hate to be the only voice of dissent here, but we're just not huge fans of CP in spite of living only a couple of hours away. We have camped there before when we have gone and the park is okay. Keep in mind that they do not allow tent camping of any kind ..... must have an RV. As for CP itself, if you are a coaster fan, they definitely have them and they're huge. Disney has totally ruined us for CP, as there is no theming there and the wait times seem longer than Disney's. I'm sure I am in the minority.

Another vote for the Bayshore campground. CP's campground is very expensive about $55/night electric only or $75/night full-hook up (these are your only options). The older section (camper village) has very small sites and the bathrooms are normally very dirty. The newer section (lighthouse point) has larger sites and cleaner bathrooms, but is very expense. CP does not allow campfires, bikes or rollerblades

Bayshore has decent size sites and is cheaper, even after paying to park. Their bathrooms are cleaner and they allow campfires, bikes and rollerblades.
Here is their website www.mhdcorp.com/bayshore.html

Camped at Lighthouse Point on site last summer. We really enjoyed ourselves at the Park. We had a 2 day splash and ride pass thing. They have lots to do and Resturants on the shuttle route. Free shuttle, very reliable and quick.
Campsite was nice w/ pavement and well manicured lawns. Pool was very nice w/ a spash thing for the kids to play in. DOWN SIDE was DEFINately the BATHROOMS! WORST I've ever been in! They have 4 bathrooms/ like tub/toilet/shower all in one room. 4 Total for a bathhouse! Granted the big Rv'rs have their own baths but REALLY wasn't a good set up. It was SOOOO
DIRTY/FILTHY!
If I hadn't had to depend on them/ I would have thought the place was just fine!
I liked the looks of the waterfront cottages, they have their own bathrooms and were very nice looking!

Chiming back in to say, we've never stayed at the CP campground either. Seems WAY too pricey. We stayed at Camp Sandusky that Anita talked about once. It was ok, the best I remember. Big clean sites - it was pretty early in the year and we had it to ourselves. Seems like the showers were just this side of communal. We usually stay here...

and love it. There is so much to do. Its a lovely little resort town, hard to describe. Its a good half hour to the park though.

Cedar Point is awsome! There are other things to do there like...Castaway Bay (waterpark) and a drive through safari.

YES! The African Safari, Mystery Hill & Prehistoric Forest, a trip to Put-in-bay, Mon-ami winery,

awwwww man, this is going to be the first year we don't go in about 9 yrs! Bummer....

of course its because thats when we are going to Disney, so I guess we'll live :thumbsup2

We live in SW Michigan and try to get to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH about every summer.

We have a camper and stay at their campground. I agree with the description everyone has given, but staying on-site makes it easy to take an afternoon break. My family sometimes wants that last big ride of the day and I'm ready to call it a day ... I'm able to walk out the back entrance and go back to the camper before the others.

You really can't compare WDW to Cedar Point in that WDW is a "Theme Park" and Cedar Point is an "Amusement Park." It has been rated several years as the World's Best Amusement Park. We have met others from the east coast while waiting in line and they can't believe how great it is. They had heard about it on the Travel Channel.

Cedar Point is one of the oldest amusement parks in the U.S. ... during the late 50's early 60's it wasn't doing so well. The owners started to revamp it based on Disneyland, where they had several themed sections to the park. But the modern Cedar Point is definitely an Amusement Park. They have some of the best coasters and well as very substantial attractions/rides for those that don't enjoy the extreme thrills.

I've not been to the water park, but they have also been doing some upgrades and it appears to be pretty nice. They also have mini-golf, raceway, bungie jumping type ride, etc on-site for an extra fee.

Other things to do in the Sandusky area is to take the ferry to one of the Lake Erie Islands - Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island and Kelley's Island are both great. We usually will take our bikes with us on the ferry and spend the day.

Cleveland isn't that far from Sandusky, so you could also relocate and check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and an Indians baseball game.

My personal opinion is that it is worth the trip.

Actually a tent is the ONLY thing they do not allow. They do allow trailers and Pop-Ups. The reason we were told for no tents is because they are right on the lake and have flooded on occasion. Tents are the only thing directly on the ground.

We went to Cedar Point a couple of years ago. The amusment park was awsome. Best place to go if you like roller coasters. However i hated the campground. There is no comparison to Disney whatsoever and I was very disappointed. We asked for a shaded site and were put right under the red coaster. I cant remember the name of it. Fortunately they ride didnt open till later in the morning and closed by 10:00. Otherwise we would have heard the screaming far too long. Our site was almost backed up to the water park so we were awaken by beach boys music blaring every morning. Those things were not too bad but the sites were horrifying. We had to have the person accross the street move their tow vehicle so we could get into our site and then our awning was touching the camper next door. YOu couldnt have a campfire and the bathrooms were very gross. THe laundry room smelled like fish and there were some kind of locusts or something very large everywhere. THere is a newer section that looks rather nice, however it is out in the sun so if you like shade, forget it. The pool was very nice but those bugs were everywhere including every inch of the surface of the water in the pool and all over the deck. I do believe they sprayed something the night before we were leaving. I would not do that campground again although it was convenient just as ft wilderness is when you need an afternoon break. In fact it is even closer than ft wilderness is.

Sorry but I could not refuse replying to this----we live in Michigan --a few hours from CP=---it is nice because it is close to us but not even close to WDW----been going to CP for years--- it is nice that they now have a campground---nice to take a break mid day and relax but it is not in the same category as FT W Campground--- If you like LARGE costers you will like this place.
PS--I did take the family to "your neighborhood" (Marthas Vineyard) camping and it was NOT fun!

Debbie - you must have been there for MayFly season. Thin bodies, big wings, coat EVERYTHING!! They are there the first half of June when we go up, too. I can't remember ever seeing them in the park at CP, but covering the houses in the little resort where we stay. Luckily for us, they are worse the closer you get to the lake, and where we go the campground is about 4 blocks out. They don't bite, they don't even have mouths. They hatch, they mate, they die, all in about 24 hours. I was told they have been bad enough in Port Clinton that they have used snowplows on them! EEEEK. I was never there when they were that bad, thank goodness.

Don't anyone be persuaded away though. Like I say, I've never noticed them in the park. They must spray something.

We drive cross country every summer to go to CP we love it. We stay at the express hotel which is on site and pretty cheap for two nights and tickets for 3 we only paid 200 it was really worth the trip
