Some of you know my mother, CDoobee. She posts here a lot more than I do. I live in South Carolina with my DH, Tom. Mom CDoobee, my sis Katelyn (CDoobeeJr.), bro Jared (TigCollinsSOCD), and stepdad, Kevin, came to visit from St. Louis 2 weeks ago. I hadn't seen any of them in over a year. Mom and Kevin met my aunt and uncle for a week in a beach condo, while I got to spend some quality time with bro and sis. Last Sunday, Mom announces that she, sis, and I will be leaving for a mini-vacation the next day, just for the girls. She said we were going to a place in North Carolina, but couldn't remember the name right then. So we got up early the next morning and piled in the car. I said my good-byes to DH, as this was the first time we had been separated for that long since we had been married, then we dropped off Dad at his motel. As we prepared to leave from there, Mom handed me the directions, telling me I was navigator. I scanned down the page, and WHA??! Lake Buena Vista? Holy mouse ears, Batman, we're goin' to Disney World!
Sis was just as surprised. I called DH from the road to fill him in.
We arrived at our destination, All-Star Music, a little after 4pm. We had an accessible room in one of the Jazz buildings (I use a motorized wheelchair). I had stayed at Movies in 2000, so this was a treat for me. Before Mom had even checked us in, I had to go see the life-sized Ariel statue by the Piano pool! Hehe It could use a new coat of paint ... Sebastian's big smile looked like he'd been eating Oreos!
We intended to head out immediately to check out Animal Kingdom Lodge. Mom has made quite a few WDW trips in the past few years, and this first stop has become somewhat of a tradition. We couldn't go right away, because it was pouring rain. We sat and watched tributes to Bob Hope on tv, then were finally able to dodge the raindrops and catch the next bus to Magic Kingdom, then transferred to the bus for AKL. I'd never seen it, so it was quite cool. We saw several creatures on the savannah, even in the dark. We had to be sure to see the "little people with the skinny heads" on the balconies, too. You see, The first time Mom visited AKL, she wasn't wearing her glasses. She looked at the balconies, and thought it was odd that there was just one person, standing perfectly still, on each balcony. Just as she was about to point this out, she realized that the people were all very short, and had tiny, skinny little heads. My DB pointed out that these were, in fact, posts on the balcony railing. Mom will never live this down.
We ate dinner there in the food court, the Mara. Dining for this trip was an experience in itself. Mom had these great vouchers, good at any number of restaurants for an entree, a side, a drink, and dessert. I am very tiny, and don't eat much, and DS is 12, so we figured the 3 of us could easily split 2 vouchers, 1 if we weren't starving. The difficulty was, DS and DM are vegetarians, whereas I am definitely not. I practically live on fish and chicken. For 3 days, however, I decided I could do without. So, that first night, we split two caesar salads, two fries, bought an extra drink, and bought these things called zebra something-or-others and German chocolate cake for our 2 desserts, which we took back to the room with us.
We left AKL about 11pm, and, realizing the parks would be closed, decided we would have to take a bus to Downtown Disney, then another back to ASMu, a real pain, since AKL and ASMu are practically spitting distance from one another. When the bus arrived, the driver said to me, "I haven't seen you since yesterday!" I told him I had only arrived today. Oops.
So he asked if we were going to party, and I told him we were just going to connect to another bus to get back to ASMu. He said he would take us straight back to ASMu! Woohoo! Of course, then he wanted a high-five from me ... then a kiss on the cheek. Hehe If he asked for anything else, I was so out of there.
Well, that was Day one. Will continue more later ...
