We are hoping to plan our first trip to DL for Summer 2013. We are WDW vets & it is very easy for us to choose an on-site moderate level resort. The trip will be all about DL. We have one DS who will be 12 yrs old next summer so no little ones to worry about. Of course we would love to choose a DL resort but I don't think that would be in the budget. Airfare will be high flying from Pittsburgh, PA. I love the reviews & the photos of CCI but I like the location of the Fairfield Inn(it just seems closer to the maingate of DL). We would want as many dining options as possible. Any thoughts on these two motels for once in a life time guests to DL?

The CCI is only a few minutes further, and if your timing is right you can hop on thier private shuttle.

I would pick the CCI. It's very nice for a motel, where as the FFI is pretty poor for a FFI.

Between the two CCI hands down, not a big fan of the FFI. Being used to WDW, it will still seem very close to the main gate. I must say though, if it is a once in a lifetime DL trip I would look out for PPH discounts. If your able to go in early June or late August you can usually get at least 25% off and in my personal experience would make your trip much more inclusive, special and magical! Good luck!

If it were once in a lifetime I sure would not settle for anything other than in the park. I have stayed at neither but many around here have.

Have not stayed at CCI but have stayed at FFI twice (2008 and 2011).

FFI is a great hotel. Sure it is a basic hotel room. But it is clean and roomy and the location is perfect.:)

CCI looks pretty. I have stayed at FFI at is was fine and more than adequate. If it truly is a once in a lifetime visit I would spend the money and stay on property. It truly makes for a more enjoyable experience. FFI is closer to DL and it has a McDonalds right in front and a pizza hut express and sandwich shop inside of the hotel. Have fun planning. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. You will have a great visit either way!

I tend to crack a little smile... when someone says "once in a lifetime trip to DL"- because I did the same thing and told DH - but we will never get to go again..." and now we are AP' holders. :lmao: Never stayed at either of those hotels.... was tempted to stay at both, as both seem nice. FFI just remodeled and now has Disney themed Rooms.... CCI seems to have the charm most places are lacking.... If it is your first visit- both of these places fall slightly over $140- I would save the extra $60- since your trip isn't till next year- and stay at the PPH. And if you could splurge and save even more- then The Grand! Start selling stuff on Craigslist/Ebay... garage sales, coin jar going.... RECYCLE EVERYTHING LOL... Good Luck!

I stayed at the Candy Cane Inn last summer. I will be honest and say that I expected much more (mostly due to the great reviews), but once I wrapped my brain around what it was--I adjusted. It is a motor coach style motel with no elevator. Very retro, and not in that kitchy sort of way...but really retro. The elevator thing may not be a problem for most people, but it was hard for me to drag our suitcases up the concrete outdoor steps (hubby didn't go with us on this trip). The pool is super tiny--almost to the point where I thought "you are kidding me, right?"...but very clean and well kept. That is when I realized what this place is all about. It isn't nice or swanky in anyone's definiton. It is NOT hotel-ey. It is a very well kept motor coach motel. Clean, and very family friendly. My daughter ended up going to the pool, and I sat by the side of it in a lawn chair--and it was actually really nice that it was so small, because I could keep an eye on her without worrying. They piped in music at the pool to make it more pleasant.

The shuttle was the greatest thing ever for us when we stayed there--totally on time and easy. We used it our entire stay, and loved it. It was so great not to have to walk back to the hotel. We are use to walking because we typically stay either at the Disneyland Hotel (or one of the other resort hotels) or if off property at a hotel on Harbor. This way we didn't have to worry about walking at all. We just timed our leaving with the time we knew the bus would be there. It was flawless for us as far as a shuttle goes.

The room was very dingy and old (the bathroom was musty smelling in the old cabinets--you won't find granite countertops and hotel style shelves here), but comfortable enough. The beds were too soft--sort of like the kind of mattresses that you can get for very cheap from Sears--the ones that cost very little and feel soft at first lay down, but then you realize that they are very low quality and that is what makes them so soft. I am a person who loves a soft bed, so I didn't think this would be a problem, but by our last night we were ready to get out of there. Even my daughter who never talks about mattress comfort complained to me.

But the people who ran the hotel were very nice and you could tell they cared about it--and the people who stayed there were THERE for Disneyland. It was all families--and very family friendly and safe feeling. I appreciated that part of it, and would stay again now that I know what to expect. I think it is great if you are driving, because you can park right in front of your room. I would recommend getting a 1st floor room due to this. The free breakfast was very modest--like boxed donuts and cereal type thing.

There are no views from this motel--it is a horse-shoe shaped motel that faces the parking area. You don't want to have your blinds open anyway, because people walk right by your room and can look right in. There is a Subway across the street for sandwiches, and a 7-11 right there on the corner.

I haven't stayed at the FFI, but I think it is more of a hotel type experience, and you do have the option of a view if you care about that. So basically, you are comparing two different kinds of places to stay. It just depends on what you like more.

I haven't stayed at the CCI but I've stayed at the Fairfield Inn. It was fine. My hubby complained that our room was a little musty. We had an adjoining room with my parents and theirs was fine. The room and hotel were clean and the staff was fine. I really have no complaint about the Fairfield but I would say that it is not as nice as the many others I've stayed in and for what you get I think it is overpriced. The price is in line with the rest of the chain but the property is not. If you've stayed at other Fairfield Inns you might be disappointed.

Are you on Southwest airlines e-mail list. If not they send out weekly deals every Tuesday. They fly from Pittsburg to SNA or LAX. It will be a long while before fares are out for next summer but if you are willing to check often you might get a deal that way. I've flown coast to coast for around $350 round trip often and this January got Houston to San Diego for $162 round trip. Another way you might save on the airfare is to sign up for a US airways Mastercard. There is an annual fee but you get a certificate that allows you to purchase two tickets at $99 if you buy one ticket. The certificate is issued around the time of your annual fee. Travel usually has to be booked 6months from the issuance and completed before the next anniversary. We use our certificate every year and it more than offsets the cost of the annual fee. Our family of 3 can usually fly for around $600 total this way. US Airways also flies from Pittsburg to SNA or LAX.

Good luck with your plans. We are splurging this year on the Grand Californian but you can have a perfectly magical DL trip staying offsite!

Thanks for all the replies. Yes we will sure try to stay at PPH but I know we will be so excited about the park experience that I am sure we will enjoy any of the Harbor Blvd motels. We are easy-going & I think it will be "neat" for us to just walk across the street to the DL entrance because we are so use to the "waiting for the Bus" at WDW & the distance between parks & resorts. If the motels are clean & Customer Service is pleasant & caring then I think we will be:goodvibes

My family and I are going in May and staying at the Fairfield...I have heard nothing but good reviews and also heard it is closer then PPH where we stayed last year!

I've stayed at both and out of those two,I'd say the CCI. They have a great private shuttle that runs every 30 minutes. It starts before the park opens and runs until after the park closes. And if you miss it, its not that far to walk. The rooms are small, but they are clean and comfortable. The free breakfast is basic, but makes it an easy start to the day.

The hotel was built about a year after the park opened, so its old. But, the entire time it has been owned by the same family. The original owner immigranted from Turkey, with his family as a child. Very much one of those "American Dream" type stories. He was willing to take the risk and believe in what Walt was doing.

CCI. I've stayed at the PPH and while it is nice, to me it's not work the extra cost. But of course, that is just me.
