I've been having this problem with a certain card that I opened almost 18 months ago to get a no interest promotional rate. Well, I haven't had any problems until last month when they "reversed" my payment, after it had been paid on time saying they couldn't locate my bank routing number (I've been paying the bill online from the checking account I've had for over 20 years every month for 18 months). It did NOT go back into my checking account though, they had it, just wouldn't apply it to my account. So, they hit me with a late fee, finally reversed it, but just did the same thing with June's payment.
I'm beyond angry at this point! It seems this company has a history of doing this when people are close to the promotional payoff date to insure you don't get it paid off in time so they can hit you with their outrageous interest rates. I have the money to pay it off, but I want to make sure the June payment is applied correctly and there are NO fees before I make that final payment so I won't get screwed. The first CS rep hung up on me when I asked to speak to a supervisor, I finally did get one, pretty sure she gave me a fake name. Ugh, the headaches this has caused this past month!
So, it can happen whether you pay online OR by check!
