I haven't found an answer yet. So, I'm going to ask, how long would it take for CC to be cleaned up and running again if Frances did major damage to it? We'll be sailing 9/19. Thanks!

No one can answer that until someone can get back to the island to assess the damage. Given the fact that the storm has been near, or over, CC for several hours now, I wouldn't plan on being able to stop there for many weeks.

Does anyone know what Disney does if they are not able to go to CC? Do the passengers enjoy and extra day at sea or do they try to find an alternative for the day?

Thanks!

It seems like Frances has been hovering directly over that island forever! I read that Nassau and Abaco were getting 100 MPH wind gusts. I can't even imagine... :sad1:

It took Disney one month to fix CC after hurricane Floyd in 1999. They did a great job. :)

I remember that. We were one of the first couple cruises after Floyd and we went to Key West instead. The dock at CC was destroyed if I remember correctly.

Hopefully the turnaround won't be quite as long this time around.

From what I can recall Pre-Floyd v Post-Floyd, the new dock is much better such that it should withstand the storm.

If they don't have to do any dredging and if the swim/snorkal lagoon wasn't messed up, I hope they can get things ready again in something more like two weeks, especially since we're on the Sept. 25 sailing of the Magic.

What about Nassau??? Does anyone know if Disney will skip this port for a few weeks as well???

I understand the cruise that left yesterday, is going to Cozumel...

will Disney continue that route until safe to go to Nassau? We are on the cruise two weeks from Sunday... and I am VERY curious as to WHERE we will be going...

We were on the first cruise after Floyd in '99 and went to Key West instead of CC.
We're hoping right know that they'll be able to fix CC quickly, as we intend to be there on 10/08.

Nevertheless IMHO this is only a really minor problem we're facing: Not being able to visit one destination during our four-week-vacation. A real problem is what the people in Florida are facing now: Losing everything.
So instead of whining about not being able to cruise as planned, all of us should keep their fingers crossed, that Frances causes as little damage as possible - and especially that nobody is harmed::yes::

My friend just got off the Wonder yesterday. A CM told her that they were told that it would take 2-3 months to make repairs. However, that was when they thought it would be a strong Cat. 4 hurricane. Hopefully, turn around will be quicker now that the storm has weakened.

A direct double eyewall hit by a slow moving Cat 3 with sustained winds to 115mph and a 10 foot storm surge? CC will be out of commision for 3 months or more. :(

Yes, but how does Francis measure up to Floyd?

At this point do we know for sure it went straight over the island, and is Francis as strong as Floyd was then? The storm surge from Floyd completely submersed the island. They also did install a replacement dock that they felt would withstand a Cat 5.

We also sailed not long after Floyd and yes the island was sad, but they had it shaped up in a few months the last time.

Anything we say at this point is conjecture until someone from DCL can get over to the island and have a look, probably won't be till tomorrow at this point.

And I managed to find this on Floyd after a lot of digging.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/1999floyd_text.html

The nearest measurements of wind speed to CC's position was 110~115. And Floyd did pass straight over the island too.

So I'd agree, it's going to be as bad as Floyd. Guess we'll find out if they really did build the dock better.

Rinkwide, where are you pulling the image off of?

Thanks for finding that, Mark. I guess we'll just have to wait to see what DCL says about the island.

Boy, I'll bet having to rebuild theisland a second time will really drive cruise prices down! ;)

My df just got back from a 4 day Wonder cruise on Thursday. The last day at sea changed to a day a Castaway Cay. The passengers were not able to disembark, but the crew was sent ashore to help pack up the island. I believe the crew that usually stays on the island evacuated with us too. What a change. . . the day before we could see the Hobie boats, hundreds of chairs & hammocks on the beach--but now everything was secured away. The captain was very concerned with what was going on and made many announcements to us letting us know what was going on. Hope Castaway Cay survives alright--it was a beautiful place to visit.

Our family was on the Magic a few days after Floyd hit CC. We did Key West instead. Bo-ring! But we quickly returned to the ship and enjoyed ourselves on board.

We did vow never to sail again in September. We're going this December and praying for everyone's safety right now, and that CC will be up and running when we get there. We missed it our first cruise and are so looking forward to experiencing it this time.

Well I had high hopes that the island would come through not to terrible, but with the hurrican practically parked over the island for the last several hours, I don't hold out much hope.

I guess the possible good news is that it looks like the island has been in the eye of the storm for the last 6 hours, but that means it still has to endure the winds when the hurrican leaves. But given that the storm continues to slow down, hurrican winds WILL pound the island for hours.

Our cruise is supposted to take us to CC a month from now but that's looking like a BIG ????

I will start by echoing others, I pray for the safety of all Floridians.
A vacation can be replanned, family heirlooms and beautiful homes can not be replaced .

I cruise next Sunday the 12th.
So my question is, does DCL call guests to inform them of changes
or do they post it on the DCL web page?

If I had ressie's at Comfort Suites in Nassau is it safe to assume I should cancel them? They have a 48 hour cancellation policy.

Kathy

Hmmm... I would wait until it gets closer to the cutoff for cancelling, it depends on how bad Nassau was really hit as to wether they'll skip there. Keeping an eye on DCL's site and waiting for contact from them is your best plan.
