Cats question

DD used a spray, but I can't remember the name of it.. It was safe to spray directly on the fabric and although the odor was pleasing to us humans, the cats found it very offensive and no longer got on the couch or chair..

After using it a few times, she no longer had to spray.. The cats just "assumed" that it was there.. LOL..;)

Just checked the hallway closet, but it's not here now.. I think she gave the rest to her MIL once the cats stopped getting on the furniture here..

It might have been "Pet Off" or something like that.. I'm pretty sure she bought it in Pet Smart.. Sorry I can't give you the exact name.. It's been so long since we've had to use it, none of us can remember the exact name..

I tried this product once - unfortunately, I can't quite remember the name either. I'm sure I got it from either Petco or Pet Smart.

This didn't work with my cat at all. She used to just LOVE to crawl up the back of one of my chairs and hook her claws into the screen door to the balcony. I say used to because we no longer have a screen door like that, and I no longer have that chair. If I still had them, I promise she'd still do it. My kitty is a stubborn old broad. :)

GIve up?
I gave in and tossed a extra blanket over the spare bed pillow the cats like to sleep on. I guess I go for covering all funiture (Tan cat, black funiture...) As far as keeping them of the counter...
Contact paper. Just tape it down sticky side up. I use the clear kind so the little devils (er I mean cats) dont know its there. They hate having there feet on sticky stuff, after a few jumps on it, they learned that "Hey the counter got sticky, its awalys going to be sticky, So If I dont like it I shouldnt jump there." Its worked well. Now if I could only train those dumb cats to stay out of the bathroom sink.

:rotfl::lmao::rotfl2:
I especially like where you eat at the counter!

I had some really stubborn foster kittens..couldn't keep them off of anything. I didn't want the foster babies to be retuned after adoption, so I tried something another diser suggested once. I took a can that had a lid like a paint can, that could be put back on. I tossed about 25-30 pennies and put the top on. I shook it when the kittens did something they shouldn't (like climb the Christmas tree) and it makes an awful noise. For those kittens, that worked great. In all my years of owning cats, none of my cats ever got on the table..that I could catch. However, I had an old farm table, and every time we came home, as we put the key in the door, we would hear a loud squeak (which was the old table) which I knew meant whoever was on the table was jumping off. Never once caught that cat on the table, but saw the footprints in the wax, often. We just pretended it didn't happen.

The biggest problem with cats and the difference between them and dogs, is that with dogs, you own them, with cats, they own you.

I'd love to give you all the tips that have worked for me & my two little kitties for the past two years. Here they are:

And here are the ones that didn't work:

1. Picking them up off the countertops/table & placing them on the floor while saying "no" (also tried explaining to them why they shouldn't be up there & that no feet are allowed on the table but they don't seem to listen).
2. Gently pushing them to make them jump off while again telling them no.
3. Putting aluminum foil on the edges of the counter.
4. Misting them with water.
5. Clapping loudly to startle them.
6. Screaming at them. (I know, I shouldn't & don't anymore, what's the point?).
7. Watch them walk on the counters and just throw my arms up & laugh.
8. The other night-took my dinner plate over to the counter & ate from there while Stewie laid on the table where my dinner plate was supposed to be.
9. Pretend I don't seem them up there.

They hate the sound of canned air--like we all used to use to clean our keyboards--DO NOT AIM THE AIR AT THE CAT, you just need to shoot a little in the sky and the sound is enough for them to run.

Another alternative to the compressed air cans (those can get expensive) is to use an air freshener in the spray. I grab a can of glade and as soon as it sounds you hear paws running everywhere on the hardwoods.

Unfortally the canned air/ glade thing may not work for all. my cats run TO the glade can for some reason. They also like room sprays. Then again my mob is odd.......

Perhaps, you should cease with using "warm apple pie" scent. :lmao:

Yeah, I have noticed the things that work on some cats don't necessarily work for all. I have one cat that wants in the shower with me. She has no fear of water. I sprayed her with a water gun once for jumping on the stove and she just looked at me like "that's all you got?"!

My kitty likes the Febreeze air freshener. I have to stop her from going and walking under the mist when I spray. She likes new scents.

Mine do too. I'm referring to the aerosol cans that force the scent out from the can. Picture the old Aquanet hairspray cans that sounded like a gas valve had broken and exploded, that's what the glade can sounds like. :rotfl:

Another thought.. My cat always hated the smell of oranges - or orange peels.. I wonder if a "citrus" room spray might help?

Luck?

:lmao:

Aside from counters and tables which are a sanitary issue--I've not had any luck keeping the kitties off of cozy chairs and couches.

Negative associations seem to work best though. My DH's ammunition of choice is a water spray bottle--squirt it on the kitty. Most cats do not like to get wet.

If you try any of these tips and they work, please let me know!

Magic and Hershey never get on the furniture or the counters, they only get on the bed. Cheeto, on the other hand, has been on every piece of furniture, countertop, cabinet etc in the house. The vet gave us many ideas which didn't work - so we eventually went to Petsmart where they talked us into buying an electric shock mat. They told us it was very safe, would just give the cats a tiny shock so they would be startled and get down. It took me two weeks to work up to using it, I was worried it would hurt them.

We put it on the countertop in the kitchen and waited for Cheeto to jump up. When he did, we waited for the shock and for him to get down. Nope. He sat down on the thing and started purring :confused3 I tested it and it definitely gave a small shock, but apprently Cheeto quite enjoyed it.
