How can I keep my cats off my new furniture sp?? I have got them there own bed and they still want on my furniture LOL

Honestly they will probably go anywhere they want--especially when you are not home.

We keep white sheets on our good furniture, and regularly wash--that way kitty is not shedding or worse puking up a hairball on good fabric. They are easy to grab off if someone is coming over, and get washed weekly with our whites.

We have found an effective way of "training" our cats. They hate the sound of canned air--like we all used to use to clean our keyboards--DO NOT AIM THE AIR AT THE CAT, you just need to shoot a little in the sky and the sound is enough for them to run. We were trying to keep them off the kitchen counters, we did the spray bottle of water and they laughed in the face of danger. The canned air has them running like a Puma is chasing them, if only we knew when they were kittens.

that is worth a shot. Thanks for the heads up

Good luck....cats pretty much go where they want! :rotfl:

Yes, buying a cat their own bed is really gimmick. Cats usually pick 3-4 places on their own that they usually rotate sleeping at. Some rotate all the time.

The only thing that worked for me was a squirt gun. But then, this pace got soaked as I was always squirting her. She finally stopped on her own as she got older.

The only other way to keep them off is by placing other things on top of what you don't want them on so they can't perch there. Kind of defeats the purpose though, as you can't sit there either.

I have three cats....there are some places I just don't want them. This is what worked for me.
Go out and find some of that heavy vinyl runner stuff. It's usually clear, and pretty heavy. It has little prickers on the bottom that hold it securely to the carpet you want to protect. Then, cut some pieces that fit the area you want to be cat-free. Put those pieces upside-down on the furniture. The cats will jump on it maybe twice, but most likely just once. Those prickers hurt their little pads. Not enough to harm them but enough to get their attention.
After awhile, you won't need to leave the plastic on those areas.

Where do you get that at?

I'd love to give you all the tips that have worked for me & my two little kitties for the past two years. Here they are:

And here are the ones that didn't work:

1. Picking them up off the countertops/table & placing them on the floor while saying "no" (also tried explaining to them why they shouldn't be up there & that no feet are allowed on the table but they don't seem to listen).
2. Gently pushing them to make them jump off while again telling them no.
3. Putting aluminum foil on the edges of the counter.
4. Misting them with water.
5. Clapping loudly to startle them.
6. Screaming at them. (I know, I shouldn't & don't anymore, what's the point?).
7. Watch them walk on the counters and just throw my arms up & laugh.
8. The other night-took my dinner plate over to the counter & ate from there while Stewie laid on the table where my dinner plate was supposed to be.
9. Pretend I don't seem them up there.

One evening when we were watching TV, I said something about how cute the cat looked curled up asleep on his chair. My husband said something along the lines of what did I mean by "his chair". Didn't I understand that they were ALL his chairs! And that pretty much sums it up. We've just learned to live with him sleeping where he wants. And vacuuming the furniture a lot.

we place sheets of aluminum foil on our couches and the cats have yet to touch them, they even run away when they hear the sound of it

Only places we discourage our cats from jumping on are the kitchen table and kitchen counter.

If we want them to stay off a particular chair we put a box on it. Otherwise they go where they want.

Cats are pretty clean animals. All you need to worry about is the excess hair. But then that gets in air and settles on things anyway. Only way to deal with it is to either (1) cover what you don't want exposed or (2) vacuum.

spray it down with coyote or fox urine.... that's a good cat repellent

;)

(you might not want to sit on it either after that, but at least it keeps the cat off it)

Good luck. Mom just bought a new recliner last month. As soon as it got here, the cats have commandeered it and she's got to "fight" to use it herself. You'd think we'd had it for MONTHS since it's now COATED in cat hair. :lmao: I told her that she actually bought it for the cats and not herself.... :rolleyes1

You can't. Even if they learn it annoys you, they'll do it when you're not there. We put their favourite blankets in the cat bed which encourages them but ultimately, if you don't want them in a particular area then you shut the door. We don't allow ours access to anywhere but the family room and bathroom unless we are in one of the other rooms.

We vacuum all our soft furnishings (couches etc.) thoroughly at least weekly, because the fur does wind up on them unless you keep on top of it.

genereally, cats go where they want, there's not a whole lot you can do about it.

i know i heard that citrus spray is something they don't care for....tried it, didn't work.

mine used to claw at our computer chairs. put double sided tape on there, they just clawed the tape off(now we have them covered).

one of my cats used to like to CLIMB the curtains in the living room. we tried tinfoil because we heard that might work....nope! we ended up buying a new curtain that he couldn't get his claws in, and we keep his claws trimmed pretty low.

we don't even TRY and get them to stay off the furniture. usually they don't get on the coffee table or end tables tho, they never gave us a problem with that.

oh god we tried the water bottle too and that didn't work at ALL!

we have 3 cats, two girls and one boy. the girls don't usually give us a problem but the boy is a little terror.

we tried the spray bottle and he just stood there getting soaked, he didn't even care. and now he sleeps IN the sink sometimes(altho lately he's taken up residence in my crockpot!:lmao:)

anytime we bring up the cats, DH says "this is THEIR house, we just live here"
