Cat's Behavoir - need help

Perhaps someone can help me. I have recently moved in with a roommate. She has several cats - one is a female cat approx. 9 years old (Casey). I have a male cat, 1 yr old (Socrates). When we first introduced them, Casey would hiss at Socrates and swipe her paw at him - he would go screaming and hide for hours. Then, two months into the move, my roommate had Casey's front claws removed. The first month after that they ignored each other - although they would be in the same room and not hiss or hide. During the past two weeks the tide has changed. Casey is now unbelieveably scared of Socrates - she sees him and screeches and hides under the furniture. She has now confined herself to the upstairs and he will hardly venture upstairs - if she even lays eyes on him, the screeching begins (not hissing!) This drives Socrates crazy and he will attempt to get at her for a minute or two and then get bored and walk away. BTW, Socrates and the other cats get along fine - as does Casey with the other cats - it's just with each other! Anyone have this problem before? I was thinking we need to take Casey to the vet - something must be wrong!

I'm not sure what the problem could be but my question is this: Why on earth would someone declaw a nine-year-old cat? The poor kitty is probably traumatized.
