I did the same thing, like I said before my son I had circumsised which is even worse.
Yup, after much deliberation, we had our son circumcised also. (My StepDad had never been circumcised and deloped some kind of infection that required a circumcision when he was in his 40s or 50s and then had to get the procedure re-done when he developed another infection or something.

He strongly recommended that we get DS circumcised when he was a baby and wouldn't be able to remember it.

I'm not too sure that I'd want the cat to have the choice of whether or not to declaw me! And since kitty strongly dislikes children, I'm sure she would have had me fixed before I gave birth to DS and DD, if it had been her choice.
To the OP, if you're willing to adopt an older cat, you may have an easier time finding one that is already declawed. Also, many shelters will only adopt out cats and kittens that are already fixed (can be done at 8-9 weeks of age, now). If the cat you want to adopt hasn't yet been fixed, you may have to wait a couple of days to bring him/her home.
Another method to train cats from scratching furniture and keep of kitchen counters etc. is to use a spray bottle and spray the cat with water any time he/she starts to scratch the furniture or gets up on the counter. You will need to provide acceptable places to scratch and nifty places to inspect.
Good Luck!
