Looking for some information about cataract surgery. Trying to decide if I should do it now, wait a few months, what kind of lense to pick, etc.

I am only 41! But, I have developed cataracts due to the amount of steriods I have taken over the years for my allergies. (The positive is it could mean not needing glasses (at least full time) since I was about 10 years old. :dance3:)

I haven't had my consultation with my surgeon yet, but I was given a little bit of information to look over and one thing was the about picking the lens type and the additional cost for picking a multifocus lens. Anyone have experience with these? What questions do I need to ask?

I just had my 2nd surgery this week (rt eye last year, left one Tues). I wasn't given a choice of lenses, but was happy w/the results nonetheless.

I've worn bifocals for years, but now I'll just need to get reading glasses. My distant sight improved to the point of being just slightly blurry, but the overall clarity is just amazing. They told me I'd be awake during the procedure, but I remember some of the prep work in the OR, then waking up in recovery.

My dad had it done at the beginning of the month- he's 54 and he was told to do his "worse" eye and wait to do the other eye.

At his follow up appointment the next day, he scheduled the second eye for next week and he CAN'T wait :rotfl2: He said the whole thing was super easy, he was making scrambled eggs by noon the day of surgery.

He says that the difference was dramatically scary- he doesn't feel comfortable driving at night with the one bad eye (the current bad eye was actually the better eye and he was driving before the surgery :scared1: :lmao:)

If you ask my dad, he would say DO IT NOW, do the worse eye and see how you feel.

I don't know what lens type he picked and I'm almost positive he didn't pick the multifocal lens (he still needs his glasses) but he might have done that because of his profession (he's a dentist which makes this whole thing even scarier :rotfl:)

My husband had both eyes done two years ago, the first in Sept. and the second six weeks later. His surgeon suggested doing the better eye first. The second surgery was a bit more intense and the doctor was afraid it might make him hesitate to do the second one if done first.

He chose the three part multi-focus lens. It was more expensive and not covered by insurance, but the results were worth it. His vision is better than 20/20 and he no longer needs reading glasses.

I am 53 and have had cataracts for 2 years now. Just had an appointment this week and they still aren"t "ripe". So I get at least another year befor surgery. I have the hereditary type. My maternal grandparents , my uncle and my mom all had them. My mom was in her 40s as was one of my brotherswho has both eyes done already.

Sad to say, but that is part of what scares me about picking or not picking the multi-focus lens. It takes a relatively inexpensive surgery to a pretty expense surgery. Trying to convince myself that I would probably save money in the end since I would more than likely not need glasses after.

The amount of glare that I get from them being directly in the center of my eye is starting to get scary. Regardless of whether it was day or night, I get glare from light so bad sometimes I am totally blinded.
