Cat with ear mites

Ok I'm pretty sure my kitties have ear mites, have any of you successfully treated a kitty with over the counter meds or is it best to take them to the vet for these?

Any advice is appreciated.

I'd say vet and I don't know about your local vet's office but most of the vet clinics around here will let you buy a bottle without bringing them all in for an exam.

I don't trust the OTC stuff, most of it doesn't work very well.

You do want to get it taken care of though and not let it go. I've seen many cats, including my Grandparent's cat when I was a kid, end up with an ear hematoma from scratching at the ear mites. Once the hematoma ruptures poor kitty ends up with a dried up ear for the rest of thier lives.

One of my cats had ear mites when he was just a kitten. I was a broke college student at the time and tried OTC stuff and it helped, but only for a week or so. I had to take him to the vet to get the good stuff, and it worked great... even if it was a struggle to keep him still.

Take the cat to the vet.

Then buy yourself a suit of chainmail because you'll be giving an unappreciative kitty eardrops for some time.

yes. My dad found the worst vet in the world who looked in kitties ears and said they were clear. They weren't, she had ear mites and scratched her little ears until they bled. We bought ear mite medication from the pet store and cleared it right up, good as new.
This is the same vet that said kitties rodent ulcer was a scratch from a cat fight. Kittie doesn't leave the house. We took her to another vet who put her on medication right away and now her little sore is gone. Sorry off topic. Yes I have had success with over the counter meds.
