Cat Litter Box Question

This is kinda gross, but if you're a cat lover, you know this is part of the game.

Can you immediately tell if your cat has pooped? I mean, can you smell it right away?

My dumb cats don't bury their "treasure", so I know when they've "deposited" it right away. Good for me, cause I can scoop it right away. Bad for me because it stinks!

My boxes are in the basement so I can't smell anything until I go to clean it. They sometimes (I have two) don't cover it. I guess they're in a hurry.

Mosty I will notice though only if they don't cover it.

Oh boy can ...I tell it stinks up the whole house! So much for bathroom deodorizers!

sometimes they cover....it dosent matter...
your eyes will start burning....

if we are home we have to clean it right away....

Mine are good coverers, but I have an even better system - it's called a dog. 'Nuff said....

One buries, one doesn't. I can usually only smell it, though, if I am in the laundry room. I think most of the time they do it when we are not home, they like their privacy.

We also have a hooded litter box with the charcoal filter in the top, which I think really cuts down on the smell.

We have this as well and it was the best investment we've ever made for the cats and for our senses! We have two kittens, one year old and one that is 5 months old now and since they are on kitten chow their treasures come out very, very smelly! But thankfully the igloo type litter box really keeps the smell from seeping out into the house. And it also is great because there are no more "misses" over the edge of the box anymore.

I've read that certain diets can make it stinkier.... so if it's a recurring problem, maybe a food switch could help.

Very true! Our early generation bengal cat (he's only 3 generations removed from the wild Asian Leopard Cat) gets the "runs" from commercial foods, so we switched both cats to a raw diet. The advantage of a raw diet is their poo is virtually odorless - the downside is we have to grind up 6 lbs. of raw chicken and supplements and freeze it every coupla weeks.

I thought my cat was the only one who did this!!

I kind of think it's because she wasn't "taught" to do it by her mother. Her mother was an outdoor cat who abandoned her kitten so my DD brought her in the house and raised her, with her other two adult cats. They don't keep their litter box very clean so I think the cats just want to get in and get out as quickly as possible!

My cat doesn't "scratch" in the litter box at all, ever. She gets in, does her business and gets right back out so I definitely know when she has left a "treasure" and I get right in there and scoop it out. I do the regular scooping daily. Have always wished she'd "cover."

Yes a food switch will help. there is a kind of food that will cut down on the stink factor.
BTW cats who don't cover usually are whats considered dominant - they dont cover becasue its their way of announcing to the world, "i'm here and this is MY territory"
I have 3 cats and only one doesnt cover - and he is the "leader of the pack" no dobt about it!
