Cat Genie, anyone?

We're considering it, so I suppose I'll let you know, but I have no intention of buying one new. They're for sale on Craigslist second hand.

My neighbors who have five cats bought two for their house. One stopped working after a year and they threw it out. The other one stinks horribly if you don't keep on top of it. There is a button to push if it malfunctions, this one was malfunctioning the whole time I was watching their cats while they were out of town. I personally prefer a regular litter box. Maybe it is because they have 5 cats that it malfunctioned so much?

I did some research on the Cat Genie, and decided against it...mostly because it had to be hooked up to a water/plumbing supply (and I have limited room in my bathrooms and laundry room), and secondly because you have to use a special expensive "litter" and chemical.

I ended up getting a Litter Robot instead (I got it from Amazon). The initial price was about the same, but I don't have to buy anything special for it and it uses the same clumping litter that we've always used.

The cat waste goes into a big drawer that is lined with a normal household 13 gallon trash bag. We have 3 cats, and DH only has to empty it every 3 days. It's simply a matter of taking out the old bag, and putting in a new one. The drawer is sealed well, so it doesn't smell at all.

I wish I'd bought it a couple of years ago, instead of the crappy LitterMaid machine we had before it.

Regardless of what you buy, make sure you let the cat(s) become acclimated to it over the period of a few days. We put the old litter box and the new one side by side for a few days (and left the new one unplugged so they wouldn't get scared by the automatic movement). After a few days we removed the old box, and a couple of days after that we plugged the new one into the electric. My cats are fairly skittish, and this method worked out well.

Wow, I watched the video and it seems so complex and like so many things could go wrong. We had a much more simplified Littermaid automatic box a while ago and I liked it.

I have a Littermaid and I am quite happy with it so far. We have had it for about two months now. I have a 5 month old kitten, and I need to change the container about every week. The litter does get out a little, but I just keep a DustBuster next to it and clean it up when needed. It is easy to empty it and keep it clean. I had a fancier version that used a special disposable tray that came with it's own litter crystals, but when I realized that I couldn't just buy empty trays and bulk crystal litter, and the replacements are $16 and they last about 3 weeks, I took it back and got the LitterMaid.

That Cat Genie looks like disaster waiting to happen.

ETA: I realize the above is a horrible run on sentence, but I just don't feel like going back and correcting it.

I have had a cat genie for nearly two years now and I absolutely love it, but I will say that it's not for everyone.

The pros are that it takes care of everything by itself... I can go for weeks without even having to think about cat litter or the litterbox. Every couple of weeks I need to add a bit more of their litter to the bowl and every two or three months I need to change the solution cartridge. When I change the cartridge I need also need to clean one of the electric sensors, but that's a 5 minute job and not messy. The best part is that I *never* need to change cat litter or deal with dirty or used cat litter at all... it has been nearly two years since I've had to touch used cat litter. Even with the littermaid and the litter robot you still need to dispose of the used litter, but this just flushes everything down the drain.

The cons are that it is rather expensive... and as a PP said, you do need to use their litter and their solution. I originally got it hoping that it would cut down on my cat litter cost, but I've found that because their stuff is reasonably expensive it really doesn't save money there. However, if you buy the products in bulk (usually I buy from Amazon when they're having a sale) you won't spend much more than you would on litter anyway.

Also, when it works it's great, but when it has a problem it can be really bad. They've made a lot of improvements on the CatGenie in the two years that I've owned it and it has probably been 8 or 9 months since I've had any sort of a clog in the drain, but it is possible to get a clog occasionally, and when that happens you can wind up with a catgenie that is full of water and... um... cat waste. It can be a bit of a job (make sure you have a pair of rubber gloves) to clean that up if it happens, but like I said, it is very rare for something like that to happen now.

It works by scooping to poop, then washing the litter, then using heated air (almost like a hairdrier) to dry the litter. Once in a while the scooping cycle will miss something and it will get cooked during the drying cycle. Cooked cat poop is not a very pleasent smell. Luckily this too is a reasonably rare occurance for me, but it seems like some people have more problems with this than others. If your cat's poop tends to be soft it seems that it's more likely to happen.

It does require a connection to your plumbing line (in a bathroom or a laundry room), so it takes a bit of work to first install, but it's really not too hard and once it's installed then you're done. It also tends to be a bit loud when it runs, so if possible you might want to avoid installing it near a bedroom. It is possible to schedule it so it doesn't run at night, however.

Finally, I suspect that the reason you're seeing a lot of them on craigslist and such now is that they recently introduced a new model (called the catgenie120). This new model lasts longer between cartridge refills (you get 120 cycles per cartridge instead of 60 on the old model), but the big advantage is that you can set the new model to automatically run 10 minutes after a cat uses it. The old model (what is likely on the craigslist postings) can only be run manually or at specific times during the day. Having used both models I can say that it is *definitely* much better to get the new automatic model and it's definitely worth spending a bit more on.

HTH and feel free to PM me if you want any more info,
Brett

Our friends had one that shorted out while they were gone and burnt their house to the ground. I'd stay away from them.

I was going to get one for our cats, but after adding up how much it would cost for me to replace the special stuff it uses it wasn't worth it to me. I ended up getting http://www.litter-robot.com/ and it is the best litter box I have ever bought. It never gets stuck and it is super easy to clean.

We have a long hair cat and have had the cat Genie for about 18 months. My Dh loves it, he is in charge and is the one who cleans, and repairs it when it gets clogged....long haired cat happens more than you'd want but....it is truly worth it. I'm going to tell him about the new one and I bet he'll order it tonight.

I've had one for about 18 months as well and they've made some great changes to help with the clogs... when I first got mine I was getting clogs pretty frequently... I've got three cats and two have long hair... but they changed the hopper design and that made a significant improvement for me. I went from going 1 to 2 weeks between clogs to months... like I said above, I don't think I've had a clog in at least 8 or 9 months now. Additionally they updated the scoop to help it scoop better and added a scraper that goes under the bowl to help keep the inside of the unit cleaner. And they also changed the design of the little plastic sensor so that you don't have to disassemble the whole catgenie to clean it... now you can just remove the processing unit and pull the plastic sensor up through the top.

If you guys buy the new one (and the automatic cycle that runs after a cat uses it is well worth it) then that will have all the updates. If you decide not to get the new one definitely call them and they should be able to send you the upgraded parts for your existing unit.

The other thing I'll mention is that the new model takes different cartridges than your existing one and your existing cartridges will not work with it (the litter is the same, though). If you have a large amount of solution right now you might want to wait until you use it up or try to sell it on craigslist or ebay or something.
