Cat Food Recommendation

Fancy Feast, it's not as junk food as people try to claim. THey'll probably eat it too. ;)

I can't agree more. We thought that until our vet recommended the Catkins diet for a pre-diabetic cat as a weight loss/health recipe. We did our research and found out the Fancy Feast is one of the healthiest cat foods out there.

Also, and this surprised us, Whiskas wet is very healthy!

My two fur balls love Purina One Indoor Advantage. I like that not only is real turkey listed as the first ingredient but it gives both hairball and weight control. One of our cats is thin with long hair and the other is chubbier.

I had to switch brands as my cat is allergic to fish. Most cats are, it's not indigenous to their diets. Cat's don't go in the water to fish and eat. Yet, pet food companies will add fish protein to cat food as it is a cheap & plentiful way to add protein instead of meat. Even companies like Newman's Own adds fish protein.

Right now, my kitty is eating ONE flavor of one brand, that is Science Diet's Hairball Control Light, along with one of the canned chicken flavors. According to my vet, they are the only ones in Science Diet which do not contain fish.

I would like to switch Kitty to another company though as I still think there is too much filler in SD.

I've never heard/seen anyone present Fancy Feast as an especially healthy choice (except Nestlé Purina)... are there any veterinarian reviews you can point me towards? That would be very helpful, since I know that these cats love eating Fancy Feast now.

Here's the Diabetic Cat diet link - they have links to follow for Fancy Feast.

But basically, if you pick only the brands that say "classic" on the can, you're good.

My cats eat Evo dry. (Not to be confused with AVO, which is avocado based)
My kitten is a Savannah. Savannah cats need a high-protein, low-grain diet. He's been eating wet and dry Evo, but I recently quit giving him the wet Evo b/c the smell made me sick. And my house smelled of it! Yuck.

We always fed our other cat Iams, and she is overweight. When we got the kitten, he would go NUTS for the Iams. We started calling it kitty crack. So I've slowly stopped giving our cat Iams and replaced it with Evo dry. Unfortunately, Evo has to be ordered at a specific pet shop, or I have to contact our breeder.

I am considering switching them to one of the other recommended Savannah foods: Taste of Wild or Blue Buffalo. These are low-grain foods. Cats are carnivores, and also as someone else pointed out, they aren't fishers... Grains and fish are added as fillers and cost-cutters to the manufacturers.

I recently switched Blackie to Wilderness from Blue Buffalo (specifically, the duck flavor). He loves it and I have seen a big change in his coat, his energy level and in his litterbox. :thumbsup2

Asking for a friend. (Evidently, my recommendation to her was inadequate. :))

She'd like recommendations for a "very healthy" cat food "that the cats will eat". The cats she's referring to are both indoor cats, about a year and half old; one's a thin spitfire, and the other a gentle giant. She cares about what's really healthy for them, but worried that they're not eating what I recommended (Science Diet), even doing the mix-half-and-half with Fancy Feast trick; she's especially worried about the thin spitfire losing weight. The food must be available at regular grocery stores - she won't order special food from online specialty vendors, nor will she buy food from veterinarians.

My cats eat Wellness brand foods. I buy it at Petco. You can't buy it at the grocery store, but Petco is right next door to the grocery store. That is the brand recommended by my vet, and it is one of those that contains no grains.

Once they've gone Fancy Feast, it's a real toss up as to them trying anything else. Kitty Krack.:)

:lmao: So true! My cats eat their Science Diet food in the morning, and like it fine straight out of the can - but to get them to eat the rest (cold from the fridge) in the evening, I have to put Fancy Feast "frosting" on it.

Great food and it's what I feel good about giving to my cats!

I suggest your kitten (I'm no longer familiar with what dogs need) be put on a high quality cat food (Chicken Soup or Wellness, perhaps). They really need taurine and other things for their eyes and heath. I've had a couple of blind kittens resecued that were lacking these things in their diet..especially when young. Your vet will have more info for you.
My little beasties (dog and kitten) eat chicken or beef, rice and carrots. Cooked and blended into a fine, toddler food consistency, mix. They love it.

I took the dog off commercial animal foods, treats and everything almost a year ago. I don't know what the kitten ate for his first 8 weeks of his life but since we got him 8 weeks ago we put him on our food and he loves it.

For treats the dog gets apple slices (peeled. He hates peel) or the stalk of a broccoli and the kitten loves cheerios.

Ah, I should have read further. I'm glad you are talking with your vet. The veterinary opthamologist has been great with our rescues, explaining about their poor nutrition before we rescued them, and I'm sure your vet will talk to you about what you need to add to your kittens diet. It's so sad (even though they do very well) when we realize, if we had just rescued them sooner we could have saved them froma life of blindness.

As for age, all of my cats and my friends cats (with few exceptions) live to 18 or so. I talk to people every weekend that stop by our adoption clinic that have older cats, so I don't see where they are dying young anymore now than they did in the past.

My beasties are thriving on their homemade diets. The vet is aware of how we feed. Baby beastie is going to the vet for a well kitten check up today and I will discuss some supplements for him because he is so young. Big beastie is doing wonderfully. He has lost weight, his skin and coat has improved (lots of allergy issues) and they both love, love, love supper time.

I stopped buying food because I have had one dog and one cat we lost at young ages (7). We then had our current dog take very ill through the winter and almost lost him. I started researching domestic animal food and didn't like what I read the biggest thing that stood out was that the pet food industry is not regulated. I also started talking to people and discovered many of them like us lost animals at a young age. I remember having animals live to almost 20 when I was growing up. Makes me wonder what they are putting in domestic pet food.
