Cat/dog food in bulk

Do you buy dry food in bulk? How do you store it? Does your pet get sick of the flavor? Does the food get stale?

I think the savings seem worth buying the food in bulk, just wondering how many people do this.

I am also wondering where you buy your pet food, or where you find the best price on food and litter.

We're getting a puppy at the end of the summer. Our breeder gave us a list of recommended food so I've been pricing it out. So far Amazon has the cheapest prices and with my Prime membership I don't have to worry about shipping charges. They have different size bags.

As for buying in bulk, we do this with our dry guinea pig food. I keep it in a rubber maid container so it's pretty airtight. It doesn't have any meat products in it though so there isn't concern about it going rancid like dog or cat food.

We're getting a small dog so I probably wouldn't buy a 30lb bag or food but I think 10lb would work.

We get our dog food at Petsmart. You usually get a small discount if you have a PertsPerk card and if you sign up for emails, you'll often get coupons. Our dog eats Purina One and we usually get a 34lb bag for around $30 (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less).

We get the Kirkland brand dog food for our dachshund. She loves it and it is very highly rated.
I think it comes in a 20 or 25lb bag. It lasts us a long time. I bought a dog food container on wheels at Target for about $20. It has a tight fitting hinged lid and works very well for us.

I buy Hills Science Diet cat food. It actually has a "use by" date, which is usually over a year out. So, I buy a big bag when it is on sale and store it in a big container. I transfer from the large container to a smaller one that I keep in the kitchen.

What do you mean by "bulk"? I get our dog food at BJ's, does that count? We get the Iams Lamb & Rice, 46 lb. bag and it lasts a few months. 3 or 4 maybe? Not sure, I never really payed that much attention, but I think that's in the ballpark. It's never gone bad an he doesn't get sick of it, it's all he's eaten since we got him. I do mix in about 2 tblsp.'s of moist food and some water when I feed him. The moist is generally the Tractor Supply brand. $6.99 for a case of it and it lasts a long time as I only use a couple spoonfuls each feeding (twice a day).

Forgot to add I dump the big bag into a Rubbermaid tote.

The largest bag available in Wellness is a 30 lb bag...my two labs eat 30 lbs in 3 weeks! They never get sick of the same food, they'd eat anything. However, Wellness changed their recipe and added fish and it smells like fish! The dogs looked at me like "WHAT"? But food is food so they gobbled it up, I am now on the hunt for a new food, because with the fish they added barley as the fourth ingredient, keep the premium price though.

I buy the 30lb bag of wellness once a month for my three little/med size dogs. I store it in this. I have never had a problem with the food spoiling.

I buy 120 lbs (3 bags) of Kirkland Super Premium Chicken and Rice at a time...approximately a 3-4 month supply. When i had more dogs (I'm currently taking a break from fostering and had some family dogs pass on), I bought 6-8 bags at a time...again, about enough for 3-4 months. I love Costco's price and like this food - it's much cheaper than similar brands. However, Costco is not particularly close, so when we go, I stock up. One bag goes in a Rubbermaid pet food storage container. The other two bags go in a window seat storage area. I've had no issues with spoilage, bugs or rodents.

I have also switched my Yorkie herd over to the Kirkland brand and I am very satisfied with the results. It is a very high quality concentrated food so don't be surprised if you don't have to feed as much food. I'm NOT advocating that you feed less, just that your pet will probably eat less of it. I also see less stool when feeding it which indicates to me that they are using more of the food within their bodies. I use the lamb and rice food.
