Hi guys,

I'm looking to book an April 07 cruise. I need two cabins. If I were to book two Cat 12, and would happen to get upgraded, what are the chances the cabins would stay close to each other? Any chance that one would get upgraded, but not the other?

Thanks in advance!

Firstly, upgrades really are rare, and seem to be even more so...Secondly, there is a chance they could be at opposite ends of the ship. You could ask to stick a NO UPGRADE clause in your reservations.... :)

We did this in January. We were on the same floor same side but a little ways apart. It worked out great for us. I assumed they made an effort to keep up near each other.

But I have no idea if they would do this every time

We were upgraded to Cat. 9.

actually cat 12 is probably the most likely to get upgraded (especially if you're booking 4 people into one room).

unfortunately there's no guarantee both rooms would be upgraded, however if you have the reservations linked IN THEORY they would see that and either upgraded both or neither instead of just upgrading one.

and if you did get upgraded, again there's no guarantee on location. if the ressies are linked I'm sure they would "try" to keep you together, but they would never promise/guarantee it.

We were probably just lucky and were on a cruise that was harder to book full. But we both got upgraded to Cat. 9. And neither room had 4 people.

I was willing to take the chance that we would not be by each other because Cat. 12 was in our budget. But if you want to be SURE you probably should book a higher category so you can choose your room.

Your thread title sez CAT 12 GUARANTEE and the discussion sort of alludes to you lookin' at a regular catagory 12 and fishing for a free upgrade. I think there is a slight difference between the two. I'll spare you the dialog.

And - I myself am trying a catagory 12 gurantee cabin for the 1st time. We've done 3 DCL sailings and were fortunate enough to score one free upgrade 2 years ago from a 9 window to a 6 veranda. Also - on our first sailing we could have bough at the pier - but did not. We were uncertain how it worked a DCL and we were OK with our reserved cabin at the time.

SO - we sail in just about 38 days and any day now we expect a cabin assignment. I rana thread recently asking for folks to vote in a poll if they had a guarantee reservation - and to indicate what sort of cabin they were assigned, plus how they reserved (DCL or TA), whether they were Castaway club or not, and whether they liked their assignment OR if it was a bad cabin somehow. I found - in brief here - that it was something like an 87% chance of getting something better than the catagory you were guaranteed in - and that there was something like an 11% chance of booking a 12 guarantee and getting a veranda. Also, I found that there was no advantage to booking through DCL or being a repeat customer (Castaway Club). In fact - there seemed to be a slight NEGATIVE benefit to getting a veranda or better then 12 assignment. Well... only 1 of 5 folks got a veranda or better.... and something like 1 in 3 folks were admitting to be castaway club members or booking through DCL. SO... it does not appear to pay to rebook with DCL or as a CC member if you're booking a 12 guarantee and fishing for an extraordinary free upgrade.

Either that - or my findings lack statistical significance and candid responses. I still hold the expectation i'LL do OK as I booked a quad... and technically I understand there are NO quads in catagory 12. But a catagory 11 is functionally NO DIFFERENT from a catagory 12 except in price. SO I will at the least save maybe just under $1000 ... let me check.... yeah.... with current pricing against what we paid about 4 weeks ago (yeah - we booked really late for this)... we're saving $1100 if we get a catagory 11 versus our cat 12 guarantee.

Of course... we have no control over location on the ship... so we might get a really bad location. And - but is nice to see on the thread I started which asked what folks got with their guarantee reservations - that NOT ONE person voted that they got a BAD cabin with a 12. However... I recall that 2 people got cabin assignments which they felt were bad and they traded or paid to transfer to an assigned cabin with a "good" location. Curious how they posted an explanation of their unacceptable cabin but they did not VOTE that they were unhappy with their cabin initially assigned. Get it?

Oh well... I still don't have an assignment. MAybe tomorrow!

Hi Captaincrash - I voted in your poll and said that we were upgraded on our sailing last week to a category 10, and we said were were upgraded to a room that was fine. It was PHYSICALLY in a wonderful location on the ship - between mid and forward, 2nd floor (very convenient to lobby, restaurants, kids club, theater, and gangways. We would absolutely stay on the 2nd floor again.) That said, it was also one of the rooms listed as a "noisy" room on the passporter and this board, #2543. It was directly under Rockin Bar D. We knew that going in, so we headed to the ship with a positive attitude, ear plugs and a noise machine. (Hey, we got a FREE $1600 upgrade for 2 categories, sailing in July- who could be sad about that! )

We had a great time, and we did hear a bass beat till about 1am. With our noise machine, It never prevented us from going to sleep. Plus, it was wonderfully quiet and dark in the mornings - great for late sleeping! As for yourself, do like us - go with a positive attitude and you won't be disappointed!!
(ps - maybe people getting guaranteed cabins are booked by DCL in the cabins least desirable because that's what's left - meaning the most desirable cabins in that category are actually pre-reserved by room number????) :confused3
