:sunny: Just wondering, does anyone know - do you have to reserve the excursion to rent the snorkel equipment ahead of time, or can you just do it that day on the island?
Also, we are a family of 4, do we have to reserve for 4 sets of equipment or can we take turns.

:bitelip: I believe you have to reserve this a head of time. It might be cheaper to bring your own snorkle stuff. If all you are going to use is the mask & snorkle it's definantly better.

We've been to Castaway Cay twice and there seemed to be ample gear for whoever wanted to rent it when we went.

You can share if you don't mind going out in pairs. Just be aware that though it is shallow, the good snorkling area is a long way out, I would not let a child go without an adult.

Since it costs $25.00 to rent, we bought our gear ahead of time and dedicated one suitcase to snorkel/beach gear and shoes. Since we did the 7 night, we used the gear on our other island stops as well.

You must wear a life vest at Castaway Cay, but they provides those free if you bring you own gear. Have fun on your trip. :)

I read this just this morning :goodvibes (from allearsnet.com)

At Castaway Cay, the rental of snorkeling equipment is $25 per day for people aged 11 and above, $10.00 for children 10 and under. You may bring your own snorkeling gear to avoid this cost. In fact, at Costco, you can pick-up a set of inexpensive gear for about the same cost. If you bring your own snorkeling equipment, you will still be required to wear one of Castaway Cay’s inflatable vests which they will loan you for no cost. The salt water may burn the eyes of some who aren’t accustomed to salt water so you may not wish to snorkel for very long. In this case, having your own snorkeling equipment might save some money. Also consider renting just two sets of snorkeling gear and sharing them among the entire family two at a time. You get the equipment for the entire day so there’ll be plenty of time for everyone. The snorkeling course is over a manufactured reef with a lot to see. There is a sunken boat and some surprises. Go snorkeling early, as the snorkelers tend to stir up the silt and reduce the underwater visibility.

A net called a "marine life protection barrier" encloses the lagoon to allow smaller fish to enter, while deterring large sea creatures if you know what we mean. ;)

I also didn't make reservations for the snorkeling, and there was plenty of gear to go around when we were there. There are so many people bringing them back all the time, that it seemed that there was a constant supply for the ones who wanted to rent and didn't have reservations!

On the April 23rd Cruise most of the people just brought like k-mart equipment and went out on thier own
